COVER First look at Tony Leung and Andy Lau’s reunion movie
The Hong Kong actors are working together again almost two decades after Infernal Affairs
A still from Hong Kong screen icons Tony Leung and Andy Lau’s highly anticipated 2022 film Goldfinger has been released.
Marking the first collaboration between the actors since the Infernal Affairs trilogy wrapped up more than 18 years ago, Goldfinger is directed and written by Felix Chong, who also helmed Infernal Affairs.
Goldfinger is the film’s Chinese title, and it is known as Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong in English. The film reportedly has a production budget of HK$350 million and is said to be one of the most expensive films made in Hong Kong cinema.
Set primarily in the 1980s, Goldfinger is a crime drama that follows the rise and fall of a Hong Kong conglomerate and its chairman Cheng Yi-yan, who undergoes a 15-year investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Cheng Yi-yan will be portrayed by Leung, and Lau will play an ICAC investigator.

The plot is reportedly based on the 1980s Carrian Group scandal—the Hong Kong conglomerate that, several years after its rapid expansion, suffered a spectacular fall from grace.
The announcement for the film was first made last year. In a press conference ahead of production in February 2021, it was revealed that Lau had believed Leung to be “the best choice” in playing his rival.
Goldfinger also stars some of the best-known names in Hong Kong entertainment, such as actor and producer Simon Yam and singer and actress Charlene Choi.
The new movie marks Leung’s return to Hong Kong film after four years. Last year, he made his Hollywood debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to critical acclaim. He had last starred in Hong Kong productions in 2018, in Monster Hunt 2 and Europe Raiders. |
