Championship title still open before last day of the Europeans
May 31, 2018
After 6 completed races it is still open which team will be European Champion in the Dragon class this year. At the event in Balatonfüred Anatoly Loginov leads before Jens Rathsack with a margin of three points. With two more races to go on Friday, everything is still possible.
On Thursday, the fourth day of the Europeans, the forecast promised no good for the competitors. PRO Bojan Gale delayed the first warning signal until 1 pm, when in a light North-Easterly breeze of about 5-6 knots the fleet was sent out to the first beat of 1.8 nautical miles. The wind was unstable and shifty and caused serious problems to most of the boats.
But the best are the best even in the most challenging conditions. Jens Rathsack’s Jeanie, Anatoly Loginov’s Annapurna, and Dmitry Samokhin’s Rocknrolla were the top boats at the first mark. They sailed a kind of match racing in the more and more unexistent wind. After the second leg the Race Committee hoisted Charlie and minus – shortening the legs drastically, trying to save the race.
Under the Hungarian sun it was Loginov who found the most wind on the course and he managed to come in first after two hours of racing. Rocknrolla finished 2nd and Jens Rathsack third. Philip Ocker’s German team crossed the finish line as fourth – and best Corinthian.
In the overall ranking after 6 races, Anatoly Loginov built up an advantage of three points in front of Jens Rathsack. Dmitry Samokhin is fighting for the bronze with Ivan Bradbury’s team, the difference is only two points.
The best Corinthian is Karl-Gustav Löhr from Sweden with an advantage of four points to Philip Ocker from Germany.
With an early start – scheduled for 9 am – two races are absolutely possible which means everything is still open. Friday is the last day of the European Championship, and we all are eager to learn who can sail home with the Virginie Heriot Cup.
Last possible warning signal is Friday, 13.55. |
