Translated article:

Tony Leung’s self-evaluation: Thirty years of shaping up, my acting skills has reached to level of kindergarten

Directed by Alan Mak and Felix Chong and starring Tony Leung, Zhou Xun, the movie "The Silent War" is currently enjoying a hot run, pulling more than 150 million Yuan at the box office already. In this movie, Tony Leung plays a blind person He Bing, who appears to be undisciplined and careless, but melancholy in his heart.

Tony feels that after reaching the five-o mark, his state of mind is just opposite to what Bing has - - he used to love to dwell on serious details, and now he has learned to see the world optimistically. He no longer suffers from insomnia, and he also doesn’t want to feel depressed. Of course, the performance of box office is not something he cares about either. He just wants to have fun, and something allows him to continue having fun. Recently, in an exclusive interview, Tony said: "I do not want to act every day, I need to maintain my enthusiasm for movies." On the other hand, he longed for improvements, this led him placing his best actor trophies under the sofa and reading books every day. It seems Tony is really a symbiont of contradictions. Perhaps because of these contradictions let the name "Tony Leung" shines transcendently.

Genius VS Motivated

"I haven’t performed to perfection, I need to improve further."

China Business Daily: You used to use your "electrified eyes" to concur movies, do you feel powerless this time to play the blind He Bing in “The Silent War"?

Tony: (laughs) Of course I’m not accustomed to this! I suddenly can’t use my eyes to express emotions; I have to rely on body language or verbal to express. At the beginning I was a bit not used to this, and I always responded with my eyes, so there were lots of NGs. However, it is not too bad to have an opportunity to act in a different way. In fact, it is not important how to play a blind person; the most important thing lies in the character.

China Business Daily: Following "Ashes of Time" and "The Sound of Color”, this is yet another blind character, do you feel any difference?

Tony: He Bing has extraordinary hearing ability and he uses this to get to know his surroundings. So before each take, I have to be clear about what he can and can’t hear, and memorize each scene. This is different from previous two movies, it is more challenging this time.

China Business Daily: In the film, your blind eyes were generated later using special effects during post production, is it because you worried that your eyes would suffer?

Tony: Originally the directors wanted me to wear colored contact lenses. But my eyes were inflamed on the first day, so I either simply wore a pair of sunglasses, or they used a computer to paint my eyes grey when I do not wear sunglasses.

China Business Daily: It sounds quite stressful?

Tony: This is an enjoyable process, there was no pressure. I'm making movies for fun.

China Business Daily: No wonder directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong said that they saw the winning certificate of your Cannes best actor award was kept under the sofa when they were in your house. How do you view those awards? Do you remember how many best actor awards you won?

Tony: I really don’t remember how many, I think quite a few of them. I keep my respects inside of my heart, and not place winning trophies on a shelf. I don’t feel like to make a public display, it obstructs further improvements.

China Business Daily: Do you think you need further improvements?

Tony: Of course! The other day a reporter said that I am a “genius actor”, I have been shaping up for 30 years, how can you still say that I am a genius? I have been constantly accumulating and improving, I never think I am a genius. Up to now, I know I haven’t reached to perfection. In fact, there are many acting masters, and I am at the level of kindergarten.

China Business Daily: What’s your ways to make further improvement? Do you repeatedly watch your own movies?

Tony: No, I don’t watch my own movies, because I like to pick problems. I love reading books; reading will bring some inspiration and enlightenment to acting.

Tony Leung Doesn’t Get Angry – a reporter's notes

Drifting in the world, no way to avoid the butcher (being hurt)
By Li Li, Yangcheng Evening News

The most "sinister" question of the day was: "You once said that one may not marry to somebody one loves the most. Are you talking about the movie or your own feelings?" The audience laughed hard, somebody even whispered "Maggie Cheung".

Tony Leung came to Guangzhou again when "The Silent War” celebrated its box office success a few days ago. This megastar, who normally avoided almost all exposures, obediently appeared in every promotional event for this new movie. This is very "unusual", opposite to the usual phenomenon in movie business. During publicity runs, a lot of big stars often absent whenever they don’t feel like to show up. They leave directors to run around the country alone. Directors have to put up a smile even when they really hated it in their hearts: "xxx really wanted to come today, but he/she was too tired and fell sick, please be understanding."

There are many "reasons" a star would be absent in publicity runs. For example, worrying about losing limelight to another big shot; or worry about losing controls at the scene, reporters asking embarrassing questions. Tony Leung really encountered the latter this time. There was a reporter earnestly "warned" Tony: "You have already played four blind characters, are you going to do this again?" Some people may make an excuse: "These four roles are not the same!" Or other would pretend to be humorous: "Of cause, everybody says one could win best actor award by portraying a blind person!" Very few could answer as honestly as Tony did:"I have been accustomed to act with my eyes. It’s very hard when I’m suddenly not allowed to use my eyes. So it is better that I don’t play a blind person in the future". There is another question about “Are you going to be part of it if directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong would make a sequel?” With the two directors standing right by his side, Tony didn’t consider too much of their feelings: "It’s better to make a film with another subject, this one is already done ..."

Tony Leung also encountered many unexpected challenges that day. Somebody directly asked: "Many people say that scenes with Zhou Xun are more eye catching than yours." Tony shrugged: "Everyone does the best of one’s own part, isn’t it a movie all about?" The most "horrible" question: "I see you wear a lot each time during promotional tours, is it because you are getting old?" The audience burst into an uproar; the host was so scared and stood there motionless. Tony relaxedly answered: "Look around, do you see lots of people wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts? What’s so special about it?" The most "sinister" question of the day was: "You once said that one may not marry to somebody one loves the most. Are you talking about the movie or your own feelings?" The audience laughed hard, somebody even whispered "Maggie Cheung". Tony replied indifferently: "There are many different relationships in the world and led to many different results, don’t you think someone fits the bill?" He turned his gaze to the reporter who questioned him, asked with a smile: "Are there such examples you ever encountered?" At this point, the speechless person is the one who had the question.

If there wasn’t a small detail occurred at the end, perhaps I would view today’s Tony Leung as a “high class veteran”, who is very good at hiding his inner discontent. As everybody was preparing to leave after the press conference, I suddenly heard a staff asking loudly: "Who earlier asked to have a photo with Tony?" I turned around and found Tony was quietly standing by the side of the small stage door and waiting. Now I am reminded that there was a reporter asked him at the beginning of the press conference: "Can I have a photo with you?" There were so many things happened later on. Perhaps even that reporter had forgotten, but Tony remembered.

I'm "home" now ^_^. Hi, everybody Laughing
First of all, I'd like say "thank u" to our kind translator Yitian Giving a kiss . Thanks to u, I can approach the information easier...Smile

According to the content of second article translated above, actually, i don't like the reporters giving Tony hard time. I always feel a bit uncomfortable everytime I hear some words hurtful to my beloved ones.
In my viewpoint, during the promotion, Tony dressed simple as everyone but the exquisite aura from Tony himself made his appearance so elegant and eye-catching Smile. That's why some may get the hallucination that "wear a lot" Embarassed . The fact is totally not as what they think. Very Happy
For different roles, the talented actors have got different ways to deal with them. Many reporters tend to focus on how the blind look like more than how the feeling of the blind He Bing is. Also, it seems to be easier for many to see something highlighted than truly feel what happens inside a true human being...the inner sense, inner emotion...^_^ In this case, what I consider to be the "highlight" in many reporters' view is "the blind". If we only care about the physical angle of the blind (how to perform this appearance), "Blind Romance" can satisfy absolutely.
I fall in love with Tony's acting in this movie. Although so far I just watched trailers and documentaries, I like the way Tony performed He Bing very much... Laughing. Waiting for the full movie Smile

I feel so moved Laughing . The last sentence makes me feel...so warm In Love

Again, thanks a lot, yitian Applause

Hey guys, you’re all welcome Very Happy .

I like the last part of the 2nd translated article the best too – very Tonyishly warm love . I equally dislike seeing reporters frequently attacking Tony from left, right and centered with all sorts of idiotic (and/or malicious) questions Mad . This must be part of the reason why Tony hates interviews and press conferences. But I do like to see the way Tony shuts these people off Wink . And I learn a bit every time.
