TIFF Report: Days 3 & 4

Saw the world premiere of Defendor starring Woody Harrelson on Saturday night. The movie was about an everyday guy who believes he's a superhero. He goes around battling criminals in a suburban neighbourhood west of Toronto. At first I thought the movie would be more of a comedy, but it actually turned into something more real and heartfelt towards the end. Most of the actors and the director was on hand for the Q&A at the end.

Yesterday night I saw an animated feature called My Dog Tulip, which is based on a novel written by J.R. Ackerley. The movie really brought to light the intimate relationship between a man and his dog. The genre was more suited towards adults, even though the movie was an animation. The animation itself was quite impressive as it was all hand-drawn using paperless technology. The voice actors in the movie included Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) and Lynn Redgrave. Christopher Plummer was excellent as the main character and narrator. I was sitting a few rows behind him in the theatre. We even got buttons with Tulip's illustration on it as we left the theatre.

Now I will go back to sleep inside my little cubicle. Smile

TIFF Report: Days 6 & 7

Ended up seeing two Japanese films, both coincidentally starring Matsuyama Kennichi. First one was 'The Bare Essence of Life' and the second was 'Kamui'.

'The Bare Essence of Life' was a bit of a surreal story. I think if I talk too much about the actual storyline, it would be a little hard to follow. However I think that the pace and the way it was told was very well done. The film's purpose was to evoke self reflection. As the director put it, the movie wasn't suppose to be refreshing or lighthearted, it was intended to cause a little unease for the audience. Having said that, it allows us to reflect on our own lives by comparing to what transpired in the film.

Totally opposite of that, Kamui didn't require as much intellect to follow. Purely put, it was a ninja movie. If you're into that genre, then I don't think I need to sell you on it. Wink

With that said, I really enjoyed the movie. There were the appropriate amounts of guts and gore, action scenes and a little dry humour. I'll have to ask Japanese fans what they think of the movie when it opens on the 19th.

There was also one line it in that made people in the theatre laugh out loud. I'm not sure if it has the same meaning in Japanese as it does in English, but does the idiom 'being in the same boat' have the same direct meaning in Japanese? It was used both figuratively and literally in the movie, which was why everyone was laughing so much. Sometimes I wonder if parts of the movie are intended to be funny when it's translated over. Hehehe.

Hello Jenny,

You've seen some Japanese movies earlier than me. Shocked
We also use the idiom 'being in the same boat', but I guess if they were actually on the boat, it probably was just direct translation and not intended to be funny. (Isn't it a very serious movie ?)
Also I can understand why the audience was laughing so much because when the things are not intended to be funny, it is usually funnier. Laughing

I can tell you what he said in Japanese when I watch it.

See you in November !

Dear Safran,

Jenny is not coming to Tokyo for TIFF this time, because Tony is not coming for TIFF this year. (ha ha ha just joking. Wink It is just because of Jenny's schedule.)
TIFF in Tokyo is going to be held in Oct. and Jenny is planning to come to Tokyo in Nov.

Dear Kat,

You'll have a chance to come to Japan or HK in the future. We will welcome you ! Giving a kiss
Or Tony might visit Italy before that, so don't be sad and dream about the day !
I believe if you have more dreams, more dreams come true in the future.
sunny Don't you agree ?

Hello Eri

You are right of course - seem I am inattentive and forgetful today -
(Yuka wrote already here: TIFF is in October ! )

Nevertheless I wish you much fun together in November - even though without Tony!

Dear Jenny,
I haven’t watched movies you mentioned. May be you can teach me
about Japanese films when you come to Japan!! Wink
As you know, Kenichi Matsuyama will be playing Anh Hung Tran’s "Norwegian Wood" main role.
I’m not so interested in the casts of this movie ( sorry !)
but very interested in how the director is going to visualize this story.
BTW, I’m going to watch Air Doll by Hirokazu Koreeda next week. It was also in Toronto IFF, too.

Hi Kat,
Please don’t be so sad. I’m sure your wish will come true in the future.....!!
And your vivid soul and spirit can wander around anywhere(including this forum) ,
transcending physical presence!?!?
I hope I can visit you and Helga some day.

Have a nice weekend Very Happy
