PostPosted: Thu Mar 26, 2009 5:17 am    Post subject: Tony's interview in Beijing

I've found a very good interview at his recent promotion in Beijing.

Original was in Chinese and I found it very interesting and very much like Tony, so I translated into English.

---------------------

Tony Leung usually a solitary and a man with few words was very wonderful in this special interview. He answered various sharp questions with a wealth of wit and humor.

Q: Which role in "Ashes of Time" do you think the most like you ?

T: I don't think I am like any of them. I am myself.

Q: Do you think "Ashes of Time" is the best work of Leslie ?

T: I think all Leslie's works are very good.

Q: A lot of people say that "Ashes of Time" is very difficult to understand, what do you think ?

T: This movie afflicts the sense of people's mind, the human nature, love, and the fate of receiving painful wound. Is it so difficult ?

Q: Do you believe the fate?

T: I believe it. However, I believe that the person can change the fate.

Q: Have you had any experience of fighting against your fate in your life ?

T: I don't think so. I also don't know how, but I think a person can change the fate by his effort.

Q: What is different now compare with the time you were shooting "Ashes of Time" ?

T: 17 years has past, there are lots of changes in all aspects, and specially about Love. At that time, I thought Love is a devotion, but now I understand that Love is to cherish. After getting older, we don't need strict rules. You and another person have been together for such a long time, we don't need to argue with and hurt each other. Now I understand that it is not so easy for you to be with one person for such a long time, so I can cherish it.

Q: How is it to work with Wong Ka Wai ?

T: Time that we cooperated is very long, and therefore, we can understand each other without talking. Wong Ka Wai is a movie director who thinks the story is very important. I felt he understands me very much.

Q: Wong Ka Wai, Ang Lee and John Woo, you had worked with three famous directors, what do you think about them ?

T: Ang Lee is very strict and precise to actors. John Woo is very nice person but also actually quite strict. Wong Ka Wai understands me the most because we have been working together for a long time.

Q: Can you tell us about your recent movie plan ? You and Wong Ka Wai are planning to shoot "First Generation Master", and you have been training for 2 months now. Wong Ka Wai said that you are going to have "stomach muscles separated into eight", is it true ?

T: He is only joking. (laugh) I am not like that. Now I am reading materials and learning Wing Chun. I will have a lot of real Kung Fu scenes and for me, this experience is very refreshing. Recently I actually wanted to take a Kung Fu movie.

Q: I knew that you rejected the offer from Danny Boyle who directed "Slumdog Millionaire", why ?

T: He wanted me to be a Space man (? ? I don't know what kind of story: Eri ) and I had to take some training for that. Although I like this director, I didn't like the role and the script. I didn't like the story, that's why I refused.

In Japan, movie was introduced as "Sunshine 2057"
Hiroyuki Sanada played the one of the role called Kaneda.
I prefer other Danny Boyle's works such as Shallow Grave
and Trainspotting etc. Smile

Dear Eri and Info,

I thought that this Ashes of Time press conference had to be interesting, but actually didn't have the courage to ask for a translation.

... And... who have I to kill for Carina's red suit?

Thank you

Dear Info and Yuka,

Thanks for the information of the film they were talking about.

Now I understood. I thought that was about the future project.
Tony might have another chance to work with Danny Boyle in the future then, as he said in another interview.

Dear Everyone,

There were a lot of official interviews and press conferences in Beijing this time, but I specially liked this one.

Follow up information from another interview.

There was the premier of <Slumdog Millionaire> in Beijing yesterday. This film's director Danny Boyle has been acquainted with Tony Leung in the past.

Tony said with a laugh "At that time he wanted me to act a Space man in <Sunshine>. He said that I should go to National Aeronautics and Space Administration and train for a while. This scared me and I replied quickly, next time."

Tony said he had been interested in Danny Boyle, "I like his films very much, so I was very happy when I heard he offered me the role, however I didn't like the script of <Sunshine>. I didn't want to agree to do this one, just because I like the Director so I turned down this offer. There might be another chance later."

Dear Kat,

I will try to collect as much as Tony's interviews in Chinese first, and will translate some of the interesting one to English when I have time. Others are of course welcome to help.

Btw, I have collected some videos of Tony's appearance in BJ in the Schedule Section. Enjoy!

Thanks Info,

Just the photos would do. Do you remember all the martyr's work that Jenny did about the Harper's Bazaar Interview? I still feel guilty!

Tony seems very different now: not only very fit, but also, in some subtle ways, sort of more authoritative and somewhat dangerous. What do you think? Ah, it is not in the words, there's something in his eyes...

Eri, thanks for your work!!

Kat, the HB interview was insanely long and difficult to translate, but it was well worth it since all of you were able to enjoy it!

Info, there's a number of articles left. I can help with the translations, but just let me know which ones still need to be done so we don't overlap. Very Happy

Thank you Jenny,

I cannot translate as good as you, but I think it is a good way to learn Chinese (although I cannot speak Mandarin), so I tried. Laughing
Because if you are interested in something you can make more efforts.

It would be appreciated by a lot of people if you could translate some of the articles. Very Happy
