Could anyone tell me where Tony gets the nickname Wai Jai from? I read it on this site and don't know why this would be one of his nicknames. It's even included in the address of his official website http://www.wai-jai.info/ Does it by any chance come from the Chiu Wai part of his name? Or does it mean something in Cantonese? Also I hear that Tony's given the nickname Short Tony by people in Hong Kong to distinguish him from Tony Leung Ka Fai (nicknamed Big Tony). The thing that confuses me is why give them these nicknames when Tony Leung Ka Fai is only a quarter of an inch taller than Tony Leung Chiu Wai? (According to the IMDB Tony Leung Chiu Wai is 5'7 and a half and Tony Leung Ka Fai is 5'7 and three quarters.) |

Wai Jai comes from Chiu Wai's "Wai". It is common to call young man "Jai" in Cantonese, which means son. Basically, "Wai Jai" means young Wai.
People in Hong Kong seldom differentiate the two Tonys with "Short Tony" and "Big Tony". In fact, we normally call our Tony "Wai Jai", (or "Chiu Wai" nowadays as he is no longer young ), and the other Tony "Kar Fai". It's mainly the westerners who differentiate the two Tonys as "Big Tony" and "Small Tony", as Kar Fai is older than Chiu Wai. |

WAI-JAI is a very common way to call him in Cantonese, but I prefer "TONY" . Sounds sweet!!!!!
Quote: | he is no longer young | Although Tony's getting old every day but to me, Tony's still the same Tony as the first time I knew him. I can't help respecting him more and more everyday passing. Tony's REAL! Still the best man in my heart because of both strengths and weaknesses that he never denies. _________________ Nothing remains the same forever! (from "Fallen Angels" - 1995) |
