My stomach is still full of yummy food.... Wink

You may have noticed many red wine bottles in town.
Today is Beaujolais Nouveau release day...
It used to be a big boom in Japan.( and may be still is...???)
I'm not into Beaujolais Nouveau stuff at all . I prefer old ones. Wink

See you guys again on Doyoubi!! Very Happy

P.S.Your ( and your sister's) Japanese accent is perfect !

Dear Jenny and Yuka !

Reading your cheerful letters, I had to smile - must have been a beautiful day together !

Yuka you have a good feeling for red wine - I agree with you !
I have to admit: Taste is something individual, but in my opinion "Beaujolais Nouveau" in France or "Vino Novello" from Italy (sorry Mimma) or "G´Staubter" (="the dusty one") in Austria........ are not more than a clever marketing idea for .......- is snobbish.
It is no really wine, not matured yet ! - Yuka, you are right to prefer an older, matured red one !
Hope to clink glasses and drink a glass, or two....of good Red with you - if we meet somewhen, somewhere !

Dear Autumn-Greetings (with: on open fire roasted chestnuts, new walnuts, thin sliced smoked bacon/prosciutto crudo....fresh dark farmers bread - and - a glass of red wine) --- hmmmmm - Are you able to smell this aromatic smoky scent of Autumn?

I knew you're going to like it ! Very Happy I'll try to find something more modern for you.

I saw "Thirst" by Park Chan-wook at Tokyo Filmex (Closing Film) today.
I was getting dizzy from anemia .... ( It's a kind of.... vampire story ....) ha-ha.
I was dissapointed may be because I was expecting too much for his latest work.
Actors and actresses are great. Concept is unique. But I thought the plots are defocused
and not clear about what he wants to convey. I'm sorry but I have to say it'll be difficult
to be a hit in Japanese market.
"Spring Fever " by Lou Ye which I saw yesterday( although genre is totally different ) was much better !!

BTW, Tokyo Filmex Grand Prix went to "Breathless" by Yan Ik-June.
I think you've already watched this one, too. I have to wait until Spring to watch it !

Hi girls, hello yuka !

I am back again with wonderful, very new and "oriental" impressions !

Dear Yuka - you was disappointed from Park Chan-wook´s "Thirst" ?
I did like its black humor very much - but in fact, it is too crazy/queer to become a commercial hit ( like his other movies too - HERE !) and isn´t this the same problem for many excellent movies - unfortunately ?

You could watch
"Spring Fever" ("my personal Cannes favourite" - hahaha) on Filmex too ? Wow! with japanese subtitles ? I fear it will never come to our cinemas.

"Ddongpari"= "Breathless" I did like very much, though it shows some brutal scenes in the first half. It is a Thriller, but a love-story and "sad comedy" too! The Director (and Main Character) is excellent, like the other actors too!

Some locations (same streets in Seoul ?) did remember me totally to
"The Chaser" D: Na Hong-Jin, (the winner of the Film-Asia in Graz) had big success in South Corea - perhaps you can watch this very good, exciting "Ex-Cop"- Thriller earlier !

Have to finish now - see you soon dear friends !

Oh Yuka, I forgot :
In case of literature: I am very grateful for your tips, but please don´t go to any troubles for me !
Meanwhile I´ve got "Snow Country" in german (for my mother) and some modern chinese novels too - and at "Amazone" I could find:
"The Moon in the Water: Understanding Tanizaki, Kawabata, and Mishima" by Gwenn Boardman Petersen (in engl.)- hope it is helpful -
"Nemurero bijo" by Yasunari Kawabata and "Toro" another Yasushi Inoue (my fifth) in german too.
Heartly

I saw "Thirst" recently too. I think it's an interesting take on the Vampire genre but it felt more like a Vampire Noir story to me.

I didn't enjoy it as much as his other movies but I think it's a film and story on a smaller scale. In that respect I liked it but agree with Yuka that there didn't seem to be an underlined message.

Hello Paul, dear TT Friend

I agree with "Vampire Noir" exact - and I was amused !

Is there always a need for underlined messages ?

Friendly Greetings - hope you are fine !

Hello boys and girls,

I saw “The Chaser” in theater. I thought the director did a great job for his debut film.
I wasn’t impressed with the story but was amazed by the dynamism which Japanese films
( or any other commercial films)lack nowadays.

I watched “Spring Fever” with Japanese & English subtitles. As I have written before,
Tokyo Filmex lineup is less commercial and most of them are not sold to Japanese movie distributors, yet. (Spring Fever, too)
I think it should be bought for public screening.( Helga, I’m sure you’ll love Tokyo Filmex lineup Smile )

Safran wrote:

I understand it depends on each audience what to perceive from the movie itself but I also believe
or I hope to find a bit of underlying theme, philosophy or policy why the director wanted to shoot a certain film,
theme and story etc. etc. I don’t want to believe it’s only a financial reason. Ha-ha.
I know it’s difficult to balance between commercialism and artistry.
This time the movie didn’t strike my senses as his past works did like "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance "
(my No.1 favorite Mr. Park Chan wook movie ), "JSA" and " Old Boy".
To be honest, I was bored around last 20minutes.( Sorry if any of you are passionate fan of his movie!!)
It’s certainly a vampire noir – love story. But for me, it slightly lacked conviction on relationships between the characters.

Mr. Park Chan wook said at QA session after screening, vampire isn’t included in his plan
at the beginning .He had an idea of this film 10 years ago. He told Ms. Kim Ok vin (heroine)
to watch “Possession” by Andrzej Zulawski starring Isabelle Adjani for reference.
I saw this film many many many years ago. Story is somewhat bizarre but I.A.is excellent in her very eccentric role.
May be Mr. PCW wanted his heroine to perform madness and with black humor of his own…..
And I can say with total confidence that I don’t recommend this film for a first date...... Wink

Hi Safran,

I agree that there doesn't need to be an underlined message or deeper meaning to the film. But after viewing Park Chan-wook's other movies I had thought that there might be some theme he wanted to express that would leave people with questions when leaving the cinema as I had when I watched his other movies. This isn't a criticism on the film though. I liked how he weaved in vampire mythology and gave it a slightly more realistic tone.

Dear Yuka and Paul

Thanks for this interesting exchange of views !
- In my opinion it really depends on: What do we expect from a director, movie and/or if we are influenced from different experiences or critics - in any direction.......and last but not least : a question of individual personality, character, taste and view...!
Yuka "Old Boy" is one of my PCw favourites too, or - very different - "I´m a Cyborg...." (shame, I still had no opportunity to watch "Sympathy for Mr. Venegeance" - for Example) - He seem to try a lot, is experimenting, is "playing" - with his audience too ?!
For me "Thirst" is a kind of "Persiflage"(you understand ?), with its own irony and humor - not more, not less.
Perhaps it is not his best film, o.k. - I am not able or willing to judge.
The most important for me: I liked it. (Maybe my humor is a bit strange or my memory has got "black holes" already ? hahaha)

You found the right words for "The Chaser" - Dynamism !
An impressive timing.......good actors......exotic but not too difficult to follow for western audience - could become a hit in western commercial Cinemas too - but dubbed only ! "Breathless" ? Hmm, I do not know !

Dear friends, in Tokyo it´s Midnight already ! - Hope you are in bed, dreaming beautiful, sweet dreams...... (no nightmares, no fighting with Vampires who try to bite you for drinking your blood......uuuuuuuuuhhh)

Have a restful sleep !

Bye, Helga

Dear Ladies and Gentleman,
probably for you drink vine is a serious business.

As you know, I'm not fond of the drink, but that doesn't mean that I don't know it.

Here it is a normal occurrence to drink the novello, nothing to do with marketing devices. Here. It's the chance to put up a bonfire, cook some chestnuts on the embers and drink this young vine. It says how it will grow at maturation depending on the sugar and tannin percentage, that at this stage are easy to spot.

Most of all, it's a chance to get together.

Bye, and enjoy! Drunken
