Star shows chops in harbor race
http://www.thestandard.com.hk/section-news.php?id=195996
Riley Chan 23 May 2018

Award-winning actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai showed a knack for sailing as he and his crew finished second at the Spring Regatta 2018 on Sunday.

It was Leung's maiden appearance in a sailing competition on Victoria Harbour.

Racing at a wind speed of six to eight nautical miles per hour, Leung's boat - Davinloong - defeated 90 other teams in the annual closing regatta of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's racing season.

He lost to Simon Chan's Kamloong while the second runner up was Ken Wong and his boat Minion.

Speaking after the victory, Leung said the race was exhilarating due to the Victoria Harbour's strong currents. But, he said the best part of the event was being able to sail alongside experienced sailors and connect with friends.

He added he wasn't too fussed about the outcome of the race.

The actor said he has always had a fascination for the ocean and had wanted to learn to sail since he was a child.

Leung said that he finds sailing relaxing and peaceful.

The 55-year-old finally got a chance to take proper lessons a year ago, and has since "fallen in love" with the sport. He said the sport is suitable for people of all ages, and added that it is something he can continue doing as he gets older.

Leung revealed that he was set to participate in a sailing competition in Switzerland last year, but was forced to withdraw from the event after being offered a role in the movie Theory of Ambitions, which required him to invest a tremendous amount of time to practice playing the piano.

Following his victory on Sunday, Leung revealed he will travel to Hungary at the end of the month for a European race, hoping to pick the brains of more experienced sailors and enhance his sailing skills.

I am curious about the name Devin (Loong obviously means Dragon). The top definition in urban dictionary (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Davin), Devin means "A wonderful man full of kindness, hope and love! Some one to cherish for the rest of time! Always great in bed! A man that should be a god!" Laughing Laughing Laughing. In other words, Devin simply is a dearly loved man.

Congratulations Tony!
And good luck in Hungary!

Could be Lake Balaton, Helga but could also be Velence Lake but Lake Balaton is bigger. The biggest lake in Europe, as far as I know.

For me this news brings a huge smile on my face, because among all the places I`ve visited, Lake Balaton is number 2 after HK. I`ve been there many times. Even took 4 clients there 3 years ago and they loved it a lot.

Here are a few impressions.

From Balatonfüred Hungary, Tony will be racing at the Dragon European Championship 2018

Dragon Europeans in Balatonfüred opened
May 28, 2018

Mr. István Bóka, the mayor of Balatonfüred, declared the 2018 Dragon European Championship opened on Sunday evening. 57 boats from 15 countries will sail for the Virginie Heriot Cup on Lake Balaton in Hungary until Friday night.

About 200 participants, their helpers and family members, Race Committee, volunteers and some spectators gathered on the impressive Gyógy Square in Balatonfüred, where the opening ceremony was held in front of the ancient building of Hotel Anna Grand.

IDA Chairman Vasily Senatorov thanked to the organizers and was positive that it will be a great event. The Mayor of Balatonfüred told that the Dragon Europeans is one of the two most important sailing events for the city, and they have been supporting the idea to have it here right from the application.

After the formal part of the ceremony the Balatonfüred Folk Dance Ensemble performed some traditional Hungarian dances which was long applauded by the sailors. The event was completed by some snacks and a glass of prosecco from the South Balaton region.

You find a film about the opening ceremony here.

The most important part of the event is starting on Monday. The first race is scheduled for 11.00, and PRO Bojan Gale from Slovenia is expecting the helmsmen for a briefing at 9.30.

No race on day 1 in Balatonfüred
May 28, 2018
https://dragoneuropeans2018.hu/no-race-on-day-1-in-balatonfured/

There were no races on the first racing day in Balatonfüred at the Europeans. In the morning a North-Easterly of some 6 knots was waiting for the competitors. PRO Bojan Gale sent the fleet out at the scheduled time.

However the wind was dropping gradually, so instead of a warning signal AP was displayed. As the sun was shining and Balaton’s water is warm enough, some sailors went swimming. After the windspeed went under 3 knots, AP over H was hoisted.

The fleet was waiting ashore but the wind said goodbye for Monday, so it was decided to postpone for tomorrow. The Race Committee thinks there might be a chance for wind earlier, so the scheduled first warning signal is 9 am on Tuesday.

Instead of racing, the competitors had a chance to learn the excellent Hungarian wines of the Szt. Donát vineyard from Csopak and enjoy some Hungarian hams, sausages and bacons sponsored by the farm Öregtanya.

Rest of the news posts from the official website:

Rocknrolla with Dmitry Samokhin leads after 3 races in Balatonfüred
May 29, 2018

Tuesday morning it was early getting-up for the field of the Dragon Europeans. The warning signal was planned for 09.00 am, and PRO Bojan Gale said at the morning briefing that he hopes for some wind, enough for maybe one or two races and he sent everyone out onto the waters of Lake Balaton.

In the end the wind was with organizers: three races could be held, which means the Europeans is going as scheduled. After the first three races the Russian team with Dmitry Samokhin at the helm is leading with a margin of 5 points to Jens Rathsack (MON 2) and 9 points to Ivan Bradbury (GBR 375).

The first start was clear and the field could sail in a light 5-7 knots wind from the North-East. The first beat was set on 1.8 miles and the following legs were some shorter, so in the end the Dragons sailed a race of one hour and 45 minutes. Jörgen Schönherr from Denmark made a start to finish victory with his African Queen and his team consisting of Theis Palm and Christian Videbaek. Jens Rathsack, sailing for Monaco with his Portuguese crew Tiago Marcelino and Diogo Pereira, came as second, and the third place went to Ivan Bradbury from GBR who is sailing with Lars Hendriksen and George Leonchuk.

The second race could be started right after the boats returned to the starting line. The wind increased a bit and the first start attempt proved to be successful. Those who went right on the 1.8 miles long first beat were right – a windshift brought them into the top positions. The wind went on to shift gradually on the right but the Race Committee managed to change the course on time, so it remained a fair race. Rocknrolla (RUS 76), the winner of the Hungarian Championship, with Dmitry Samokhin, Alexey Bushuev and Andrey Kirilyuk crossed the line first. The Corinthian Swedish team of Carl Gustaf Löhr (Jesper Bendix, Mads Hansen) finished second, ant Ivan Bradbury third.

In order to get back to schedule PRO Bojan Gale decided to start a third race. The wind increased to 10 to 14 knots and shifted to East. The conditions were beautiful: sunshine, nice waves and some wind when the Dragons are beginning to sail lively… The first beat was set on 2.0 miles.

The wind was shifting and the boats were too eager to start at the committee boat – it ended up as usual with a general recall. After changing the line a second attempt was made – without success. So Bojan Gale let the black flag rule – and for the third attempt the start went smoothly.

The third race has some tricky windshifts but Rocknrolla managed to sail perfectly again and won the race. Anatoly Loginov aboard Annapurna with his crew Alexander Shalagin and Vadim Statsenko came as second into the finish, and Carl Gustaf Löhrs Swedish team was third.

After three races Dmitry Samokhin leads, followed by Jens Rahtsack and Ivan Bradbury. The best Corinthian is SWE389, followed by the German team of Philipp Ocker.

After getting ashore the wines and champagne of Kreinbacher from the hill of Somló were offered to the exhauste sailors. At the daily prize giving Pedro Andrade offered a special prize: a V6 Petticrows chartered to a crew for free at one regatta in Algarve in Portugal. The winner was drawn – and it went to the team of Vassily Senatorov.

Tomorrow the firs warning signal is scheduled for 09.00 am again, to use the morning wind.

Anatoly Loginov leads after 5 races at the Europeans
May 30, 2018

Anatoly Loginov (RUS 27) went into lead after 5 races at the European Championship in Balatonfüred, Hungary. Jens Rathsack (MON2) is second, Ivan Bradbury is third. Best Corinthian: Karl-Gustaf Löhr (SWE 389).

The forecast promised for Wednesday some light to medium Easterly winds. PRO Bojan Gale wanted to make sure that two races can be held, so he sent out the fleet early onto the race course. At 9 am the whole fleet of some 55 boats was eager to start when the first attempt was made with “U” – resulting in a general recall. The second one proved to be more successful under a black flag – and everyone was happy to hear in the VHF that it was a clear start.

The wind was about 6 to 9 knots coming from Northeast. The first upwind mark seemed to be far away under the clouds, but the first boats reached it exactly in 30 minutes as it was planned by the Race Committee. The right-hand side paid – and MON2 with Jens Rathsack at the helm used their experience gathered last week at the Hungarian Championship as they led the fleet into the run.

About 90 minutes after the start they finished first, just before Evgen Braslavets (ITA77) with Bunker Prince, who have not sailed in the front so far, but, as we all know, have a lot of potential. The RC under guidance of Bojan made an excellent work with the flags Charlie, Minus and Green and managed to exactly match the target time of 90 minutes.

As the fleet sailed back to the starting area, the wind increased to some 14 knots, and the RC lengthened the course to 2.3 nautical miles. As usual, Uniform did not do the job, so the second attempt was made with Black. After the start four boats’ sail numbers were transmitted on the VHF: they were too eager to sail over the line. Unfortunately, Dmitry Samokhin’s RUS 76 was one of them, which meant that with their BFD they fell to 4th overall.

The 5th race was held in a shifty wind which regularly changed strength . Tough job for the sailors, but the best could manage it again. As it was the last race of the day, it was a bit longer, took about 105 minutes for the top to finish. The race victory went to Anatoly Loginov, with Hugo Stenbeck as second.

“We have a valid championship with one discard now, that is the most important thing”, PRO Bojan Gale said after the race. The fight for the Championship title is still open: RUS 27 Annapurna with Anatoly Loginov, Alexander Shalagin and Vadim Statsenko are leading, but the marge over MON 2 with Jens Rathsack and his team is only one point. The best Corinthian is still Karl-Gustaf Löhr from Sweden who is in fifth position overall.

The forecast for Thursday is not very promising: very light wind for the morning. Therefore the first warning signal is scheduled for 1 pm first. Two races are planned before the closing day on Friday, when the 8th race should be sailed.
