For the people here who don't understand Japanese or Cantonese, I will write about the premiere a little. (as a reference for watching the video)
Please correct any translation mistake as I mainly followed Japanese.
On 30 May at the Cinema in Roppongi Hills
We were seated at around 18:30, then the schedule was announced for the reporters.
At around 19:00 Tony and WKW entered the venue from the side door.
As they walked thru the audience, they waved and shaked hands with some fans. Some of the lucky people asked Tony to give them autographs.
When Tony and WKW were on the stage, they were asked to greet the audience first.
W: Good Evening. I am very happy to be here with this movie "The Grandmaster" for the people who love movies.
T: Good Evening ! After 10 years, I was very happy to work with WKW again. I am very glad to bring this movie here. I hope you like it.
MC : Mr. Wong, you spent 17 years for planning, 7 years for preparing, and 3 years for shooting, I've heard. This is a big scale movie. Why did you wanted to make this movie ?
W: I wanted to make exciting, thrilling and interesting martial art movie. I think this "The Grandmaster" is up to the level I wanted.
MC: Why did you choose Yip Man as a main character ?
W: Because he is a martial artist with cultural background. Also his life was full of ups and downs. He was born in a wealthy family and had everything and then lost everything. Still he was continue to be a martial artist all his life.
MC: Why did you choose Tony for this role ?
W: As I said Yip Man was not like other martial artists, he was like a scholar. So naturally I chose the person with gentle eyes, also intelligent and romantic. I thought Tony was the best choice.
(to the audience) Don't you agree ? (approval responce from the audience)
W: Also, Tony has marcial art talent. Before this, he didn't have any experience in marcial arts, but once started the training, he improved a lot in short time.
MC: Tony, what did you think when you were offered to be Yip Man ?
T: I was very happy, because I grew up watching Bruce Lee and Yip Man was his master.
MC: You needed to train for about 3 years ? Were you injured ?
T: Yes, I was. I knew it was hard from the beginning, however what I was not expected was that I broke my arm after 6-9 monthes' training when I reached certain level. Then I had to stop training for about 6 months, and start all over again. Also, as soon as started shooting, I broke my arm again, so had to stop again for another 6 months.
Kung Fu was not so hard but all the efforts were wasted again and again was hard.
When I completed this movie, I felt very happy and satisfied.
MC: Were you actually trained by a grandmaster ?
T: Before started shooting, I had trained for about 1-1.5 years, then continued training during shooting, so about 4 years.
Guest Actress Yoko Maki presenting flower to WKW and Tony.
MC: Miss Maki, would you introduce yourself ?
YM: I am Yoko Maki, and I am an Actress. I am so grateful to see such great artists like them.
I am more nervous now than working on movies. Specially after watching the Grandmaster.
MC: What did you think about the movie The Grandmaster ?
YM: It was such a great movie. I was very moved by the beautiful scenes with all the details. Also the phrase "Being inherited is the heart rather than skills" really touched my heart. I felt that this was the main theme of this movie.
(Actually some of us noticed that WKW was blushed when he heard her praising him. Very cute)
MC: Mr. Wong, what do you think about her comment ?
W: (Shyly) Of course, very happy to hear that a talented actress like her was moved by and appreciated this movie.
MC: You' ve been worked on action movie before, what did you think about Tony ?
YM: I've heard that he was training for a long time even before started, so I respect him. His efforts were shown in the movie. The way he moves are completely different. It was more powerful than I expected.
MC: Are you interested in Kung Fu ?
YM: Yes, I would like to.
MC: Tony, any advice for her ?
T: It is very hard.
W: Actually, Tony is not only a good actor, but also a very good coach, especially good at coaching ladies.
YM: Please I would like to.
MC: Is it alright, Tony ?
T: (To WKW ?) I can't win with you. (Japanese sub)
(In Cantonese) I am not going to break your arm.
Later, Image song "After the Storm" was performed by singers and during the song, Tony and WKW were seated as audience.
It was quite a relaxed premiere and we enjoyed it.
For us Tony's fans in Japan, Tony week continued......

Thank you, Eri.
Although his eyes were hidden under dark glasses,
I also noticed Mr.WKW's face turning pink ,I mean RED
when Ms. Yoko Maki praised him. So cute !!
I've never seen a premiere in Japan where main guests have to
move up and down the stage for 3-4 times for photo sessions.
Quite a busy premiere. ..
And it wasn't the end of excitement for Tony's fans...... |

Thanks so much, Eri, for your translation - you cleared up few things (Cantonese) I didn't understand well .
I also noticed in the first video (http://youtu.be/OP3jO6URgTw), Tony humbly looked/smiled very shy (from 5min30sec to 6min40sec) when he heard WKW praising him as his top pick to play Ip Man character . From Tony's reaction through out both videos, it looks to me that Tony can understand (at least quite some) Japanese, am I right .

Thank you everyone for warm comments again.
Some more Tony's news are coming soon. Please give us a little more time.
yitian, Tony understands some Japanese, but at the premiere, there were 2 Cantonese - Japanese interpreters for Tony and WKW standing behind them. |

Thanks Eri. My guess came from the excellent coordination between Tony and his translator - the two made seamless connection between their speeches in the second video. Also, Tony was very responsive to the Japanese by WKW's translator in the first video while his own translator wasn't saying anything .
