http://news.xinhuanet.com/ent/2013-11/11/c_125685387.htm

http://news.xinhuanet.com/yzyd/ent/20131113/c_118120355.htm?prolongation=1

‘Grandmaster’ tipped to win Golden Horse awards
Staff writer, with CNA

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2013/11/23/2003577517

Even as the mercury drops in Taipei, speculation is heating up ahead of today’s 50th Golden Horse Awards, where Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s (王家衛) martial arts film The Grandmaster (一代宗師) leads the pack with 11 nods, but faces strong competition.

The Grandmaster is nominated for all major categories — best feature film, best director, and best leading actor and actress — making it one of the strongest contenders for this year’s awards.

Loosely based on the life of Chinese martial artist Ip Man (葉問), the film has been praised for its beautiful cinematography and unforgettable fight scenes.
The film employs many of Wong’s trademark effects such as slow-motion and evocative music, creating a visual feast that promises to take martial arts films to a new level, a feat previously accomplished by Ang Lee’s (李安) celebrated 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (臥虎藏龍), critics said.
Film critics predict that The Grandmaster will grab the award for best leading actress for a performance by China’s Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), sweep up a number of technical awards and has a good shot at best feature film and best director.
The Grandmaster’s strongest contenders are Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s (賈樟柯) A Touch of Sin (天注定) and Taiwan-based Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang’s (蔡明亮) Stray Dogs (郊遊).

A Touch of Sin centers on four working-class characters in different parts of China who are forced to use violence to resist injustice and exploitation, while Stray Dogs details a father struggling to survive with his son and daughter on the streets of Taipei.

A Touch of Sin won Jia the best screenplay award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, while Stray Dogs has earned the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Also in the running for best feature film are Ilo Ilo, a family drama by Singaporean director Anthony Chen, and Drug War (毒戰), a police thriller by Hong Kong director Johnnie To (杜琪峰). Wong, Jia, Tsai and To are joined in the best director category by Taiwan’s Chung Mong-hong (鍾孟宏) for his thriller Soul (失魂).

The award for best leading actor will also be tightly contested, with Hong Kong’s Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉), Nick Cheung (張家輝) and Tony Leung Ka Fai (梁家輝) and Taiwan’s Jimmy Wang (王羽) and Lee Kang-sheng (李康生) vying for the title.

While Zhang is tipped as favorite the leading actress category, her biggest challenge is likely to come from Hong Kong’s Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文), who plays a police officer in Blind Detective (盲探).

Hong Kong’s Cherry Ngan (顏卓靈) and Taiwan’s Kwai Lun-mei (桂綸鎂) and Shu Qi (舒淇) are also vying for the award.

Singapore, France major winners at Golden Horse
By Stephen Cremin
Sat, 23 November 2013, 20:45 PM (HKT)

http://www.filmbiz.asia/news/50th-golden-horse-awards-results

In a major surprise, Singapore's Ilo Ilo has won Best Feature at the 50th Golden Horse Awards 金馬獎, held at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.

Presenting the award, jury president Ang Lee said that there were four rounds of voting over two hours to decide the main prize. It was the first award that was decided by the jury at the start of deliberations.

It is only the second time that a debut director has won the top prize. In 1996, JIANG Wen 姜文 won for In the Heat of the Sun 陽光燦爛的日子 (1995).

Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster won six awards, the most of the evening, including recognition for actress Zhang Ziyi, cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, VFX supervisor Pierre Buffin and production designer William Chang.

Winning Best Actress, Zhang described her role in the film as a "long and suffering journey". It was the first time she had attended the ceremony and the first time she has won despite three previous nominations.

France and Singapore were major winners of the evening.

French film-makers secured several early prizes, with recognition for Matthieu Laclau's editing of A Touch of Sin, Le Sourd's cinematography on The Grandmaster and Buffin's visual effects work on Wong's martial arts film.

HU Wei 胡偉, the director of Best Short winner Butter Lamp, studied in France. The 16-minute film, which premiered in the International Critics' Week section of this year's Cannes Film Festival, is a France-China co-production.

Four of the Best Feature nominees are represented by French sales companies: Ilo Ilo by Memento Films International, A Touch of Sin by mk2 Group, The Grandmaster by Wild Bunch and Stray Dogs by Urban Distribution International.

Winning Best Director for French co-production Stray Dogs, Tsai Ming-liang said, "Everyone knows that I have a messy past with the Golden Horse Awards. They don't like me very much. And I don't like them very much either."

Tsai did praise the Awards for recognising a Malaysian director. Seven years ago, he withdrew I Don't Want to Sleep Alone 黑眼圈 (2006) as the co-opening film of the Golden Horse Film Festival after it failed to receive many nominations at the Awards.

Tsai had offered to share his award with Lee Kang-sheng if his regular collaborator didn't win Best Actor, noting how much his actors suffered in their roles. In one of the most competitive categories of the evening, Lee did secure the acting award.

Winning Best New Director for Ilo Ilo, Singapore's Anthony Chen (pictured) said that his film would not exist without the inspiration of Taiwan New Cinema, calling out Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang and Ang Lee.

The multiple awards for Ilo Ilo represents Singapore's greatest success at the event. Chen also won Best Original Screenplay for his family drama. Malaysia's Yeo Yann Yann won Best Supporting Actress for her role as the mother.

Singapore's first win was ten years ago for actress Megan ZHENG 鄭智允 in Homerun 跑吧! (2003). Two years ago, composer Ricky HO 何國杰 won Best Original Film Score for Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale 賽德克・巴萊 (2011).

Receiving the Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year award, local producer Yeh Ju-feng thanked producers Peggy Chiao and Hsu Li-kong for helping her at the start of her career, the post-production facilities in Taiwan and her partner Cho Li.

Tu Duu-chih, receiving the best editing prize for Chung Mong-hong's Soul, said, "I really wanted to keep this award in Taiwan." He was also nominated, together with Kuo Li-chi, in the category for Tsai Ming-liang's Stray Dogs.

It is Hou's final year as chairman of the Awards. His successor is to be announced at the closing party after the awards.

'Ilo.Ilo' wins best film at Golden Horse
By Katherine Wei ,The China Post
November 24, 2013, 12:27 am TWN

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/art/movies-&-films/2013/11/24/394407/Ilo.Ilo-wins.htm

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Lee Kang Sheng (李康生) and Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) were named best actor and actress for their performances in “Stray Dogs” (郊遊) and “The Grandmaster” (一代宗師), respectively, at the 50th Golden Horse Awards ceremony last night, while Tsai Ming Liang (蔡明亮) captured the best director award for “Stray Dogs.”

Singapore director Anthony Chen's (陳哲藝) film "Ilo.Ilo (爸媽不在家)" was named the best feature film.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of many previous winners of the Golden Horse Awards, including Hong Kong actors Andy Lau (劉德華), Aaron Kwok (郭富城) and this year's ceremony ambassador, actress Maggie Cheung (張曼玉). The Golden Horse Awards were founded in 1963, and many outstanding stars and filmmakers have over the years won acclaim at the event, which is considered Chinese-language cinema's equivalent to the Oscars.

Only 37 films were chosen as finalists from a pool of over 250 entries.

The Golden Horse Film Festival that accompanies the awards ceremony kicked off in early November and will last until Nov. 28, bringing many foreign films, past award-winners and the 37 nominees to Taipei cinemas.

Local celebrities Yang Qian-pei (楊千霈) and Huang Zijiao (黃子佼) welcomed stars to the red carpet, and ceremony host Kevin Tsai bantered with nominees after the ceremony had begun. This marked Tsai's seventh time hosting the event.

Taiwanese actress and singer Kuo Shu-yao (郭書瑤) burst into tears after she was announced as the winner of best new performer of the year for her role in “Step Back to Glory,” the true story of the perseverance of a group of passionate teenage girls on the Jingmei Girls High School's tug-of-war team. “I didn't prepare anything because I didn't think I would win,” sobbed the starlet.

“Beyond Beauty — Taiwan from Above,” a documentary made by local civil-servant-turned-director Chi Bo-lin (齊柏林) which features breathtaking views of Taiwan filmed from a bird's-eye view, bagged best documentary award for its gentle environmentalist message and for its qualities that moved many viewers. “It's still in the cinemas now, go and see it!” exclaimed Chi.

Best supporting actor went to Chinese actor Li Xuejian (李雪健) for his performance in “Back to 1942,” a starkly honest film depicting events of the year 1942 in China's Henan Province, where the worst famine in China's history killed 3 million people.

A reflection on contemporary China, “A Touch of Sin” won best film editing for the pair of Matthieu Laclau and Lin Xudong (林旭東). “A Touch” depicts separately the stories of four people all fighting unfairness in their lives.

Many say special sound effects can heighten a film's visceral qualities, and the judges agreed on the thriller “Soul,” produced by soundmen Tu Duu-chih (杜篤之) and Kuo Li-chi (郭禮杞), for the outstanding sound effects award, while the best original soundtrack went to “I Love You” in the film “Rock Me to the Moon.”

Nominated for a whopping 11 awards, Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai's “The Grandmaster” won awards for best makeup and costume design, best art direction and best cinematography.

The best short film award went to “Butter Lamp,” a pastiche of photos taken of Tibetan families and their unique highland culture.

Renowned Taiwanese film producer Yeh Ju-feng (葉如芬) won outstanding Taiwanese filmmaker of the year. Yeh's work in “Soul” and “Zone Pro Site” were celebrated by many fans as well as the judges.

Best supporting actress went to Yeo Yann-yann (楊雁雁) for her performance in “Ilo Ilo.”[/img]

http://ent.sina.com.cn/m/c/2013-11-22/16054047910.shtml

http://ent.sina.com.cn/m/c/2013-11-24/00384048553.shtml
