Eight films to watch out for at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival
By Jevon Phillips, May 09, 2018 | 8:40 AM

Opening-night film "Everybody Knows" may have already been snatched up by Focus Features, and a full day of screenings has happened, but there are still plenty of buzzy films that festivalgoers and those following the Cannes Film Festival should keep an eye out for.

Whether it's because of global popularity ("Solo: A Star Wars Story") or auteurs' projects with strong visions (the Spike Lee-directed "BlacKkKlansman" or Terry Gilliam's "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," if it screens), here are a few films to be on the lookout for at the festival.

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Through a series of daring escapades, young Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian.

Through a series of daring escapades, young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover). The film is directed by Ron Howard and also stars Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke and Paul Bettany.

‘The House That Jack Built’

"The House That Jack Built" follows criminal Jack (Matt Dillon) over 12 years, seeing the murders he commits that shape him as a serial killer. The film is directed by Lars von Trier and also stars Riley Keough, Jeremy Davies and Uma Thurman.

‘BlacKkKlansman’ (Focus Features)

The Spike Lee-directed "BlacKkKlansman," starring Adam Driver, John David Washington and Topher Grace, follows an African American police officer who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan and becomes the head of the local chapter.

‘Under the Silver Lake’

"Under the Silver Lake" is the story of Sam's (Andrew Garfield) infatuation with a billionaire mogul's murder and the kidnapping of a girl. The film is directed by David Robert Mitchell and also stars Jimmi Simpson, Riley Keough and Sibongile Mlambo.

This odd thriller is the story of Sam's (Andrew Garfield) infatuation with a billionaire mogul's murder and the kidnapping of a girl. The film is directed by David Robert Mitchell and also stars Jimmi Simpson, Riley Keough and Sibongile Mlambo.

‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’

An old man (Jonathan Pryce) is convinced he is Don Quixote, and mistakes Toby (Adam Driver), an advertising executive, for his trusty squire, Sancho Panza. Despite encountering some legal trouble early in the festival, the Terry Gilliam-directed film will serve as the closing-night screening. (Gilliam was also also briefly hospitalized in Cannes for a mild ailment.)

‘Arctic’ (Armory Films)

A man stranded in the Arctic is finally about to be rescued when a tragic accident hits and his opportunity is lost. He must then decide whether to remain safe at his camp or to trek through the unknown for potential salvation. Directed by Joe Penna and starring Mads Mikkelsen and Maria Thelma Smáradóttir.

‘Whitney’

Kevin Macdonald directs a documentary on the now-deceased superstar singer Whitney Houston.

Kevin Macdonald directed this documentary on the late superstar singer Whitney Houston. Her friends and family, including mother Cissy Houston and husband Bobby Brown, add insight into the woman she was in front of and behind the cameras.

‘Cold War’ (Apocalypso Pictures)

Set in 1950s Poland, this post-war love story centers on the relationship between a musician and a young singer recruited as part of a communist-approved folk music troupe. The film is directed by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski, whose last film, "Ida," won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2015. It stars Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot and Borys Szyc.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/may/08/cannes-2018-top-10-film-festival

Cannes 2018: our critic's 10 must-see films at this year's festival
Peter Bradshaw, Tue 8 May 2018 01.00 EDT

1. Cold War (dir. Pawel Pawlikowski)

A passionate, mysterious love story in postwar Poland between a musician and a young singer recruited as part of a communist-approved folk music troupe.

2. Leave No Trace (Debra Granik)

Debra Granik, who directed Winter’s Bone, comes to Directors’ Fortnight with this fascinating, subtle wilderness story of a man (Ben Foster) who takes his 13-year-old daughter to live with him in secret in a public park.

3. Everybody Knows (Asghar Farhadi)

A Spanish-language thriller from the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi. Penélope Cruz plays a woman who returns to her hometown with her husband (Ricardo Darín), only to be confronted by secrets from her past. Javier Bardem also stars.

4. Happy As Lazzaro (Alice Rohrwacher)

This looks intriguing – and features that excellent actor Sergi López. A time-travel story, according to what little the director has told us.

5. Girls of the Sun (Eva Husson)

Golshifteh Farahani plays a Kurdish fighter leading an all-female battalion called Girls of the Sun; Emmanuelle Bercot plays the French journalist who meets her there.

6. BlacKkKlansman (Spike Lee)

The remarkable true-life story of the black 70s police offer Ron Stallworth, who masterminded the infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan, talking to Klansmen on the phone and sending in white officers when face-to-face meetings were needed.

7. Burning (Lee Chang-dong)

Lee is one of Cannes’s most respected directors and he returns with this adaptation of a short story by Haruki Murakami about a writer who meets a mysterious individual claiming to be an arsonist.

8. The House That Jack Built (Lars von Trier)

Uh-oh. Lars von Trier has succeeded in reversing his “persona non grata” ban – by which bureaucratic procedures we know not – and is out-of-competition with what promises to be a headbangingly hardcore horror-thriller. Jack (Matt Dillon) is a serial killer whose grisly career we track over 12 years. Yikes.

9. Capernaum (Nadine Labaki)

A drama set in Lebanon, reportedly using a non-professional cast, about a boy who rebels against the life imposed on him by others, and launches a lawsuit.

10. Angel Face (Vanessa Filho)

It wouldn’t be Cannes without Marion Cotillard and she has a juicy role in this movie from Vanessa Filho, showing in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, about a woman who abandons her eight-year-old child for a man she’s only just met.

https://deadline.com/2018/05/cannes-film-festival-2018-winners-palme-d-or-full-list-1202394678/

In a ceremony that included a passionate Asia Argento calling out Harvey Weinstein, the proceedings finished with a first: winners were invited to step outside the Palais as Sting sent out an “SOS” in a concert from atop the red carpet.

Cate Blanchett is President of the jury in what was a year marked by many discussions of gender equality, with the festival making a pledge for parity under the aegis of the 5050×2020 movement. There were three films by female directors in Competition, and Deadline’s Pete Hammond has suggested that one of them, Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum, is a strong contender for the Palme d’Or — should she win, it would be only the second time ever a woman has scooped the honor and the first time since Jane Campion in 1993 for The Piano. Other hot titles include Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s Shoplifters. But Cannes juries are unpredictable, so right now it’s anyone’s guess. Keep checking back for the winners which will be updated below as they are announced.

Palme d’Or
Shoplifters, dir: Hirokazu Kore-Eda

Grand Prize
Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman

Jury Prize

Best Director

Best Screenplay
TIE

Nader Saeivar, 3 Faces

Best Actress
Samal Yeslyamova, My Little One

Caméra d’Or
