The Grandmaster is Time Magazine Top 10 Best Movies
http://entertainment.time.com/2013/12/04/arts-and-entertainment/slide/top-10-best-movies/
5. The Grandmaster
Running at 2 hours and 10 minutes in its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Wong Kaw-wai’s dreamy biopic of martial arts master Ip Man was cut by 22 minutes — one-fifth of its running time — by U.S. distributor The Weinstein Company. That’s a crime akin to cutting random holes in a Bosch or Breughel painting; but what’s left is choice. The Hong Kong director makes superb movies (Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, 2046) that ignore narrative drive for tales of romance and regret in a rapturous visual style of slo-mo imagery and hazy closeups of wistful stars. Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who looks like a more beautiful Obama, plays Ip Man as a poet of gestural precision, in combat scenes choreographed by the great Yuen Wo-ping (The Matrix, Kill Bill). Leung’s partner in reverie is a female doctor, daughter and martial artist played by Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon); she exudes a goddess’s solemn grandeur and is given a diva’s final aria — a fittingly elegiac climax for a world-class filmmaker who’s always in the mood for lost love.

‘Grandmaster’ tops Asia Pacific Fest Awards nominations
November 29, 2013 | 12:49AM PT

HONG KONG — Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster” tops the nominations for the awards at the upcoming Asia Pacific Film Festival (Dec. 13-15, 2013,) which will be held in Macau for the second consecutive year.
Wong’s martial arts fantasy scooped nine nominations in the 12 available categories and competes for best picture.
Other best picture nominees are Kore’eda Hirokazu’s “Like Father, Like Son,” Ritesh Batra’s “The Lunchbox,” Tsai Ming Liang’s “Stray Dogs,” Anthony Chen’s “Ilo Ilo,” and Georgia’s “In Bloom,” co-directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross.
Judging the 25 pictures will be a jury headed by venerable Hong Kong-based producer Nansun Shi (“Infernal Affairs,” “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon”). Other jurors include Malaysian director, actor, producer Afdlin Shauki; Claire Stewart, head of exhibition, British Film Institute; Christian Jeune, deputy General Delegate, Cannes International Film Festival; South Korean director Hur Jin-Ho; Taiwanese actress and director Sylvia Chang; and producer Zhang Zhao, CEO and executive director of China’s Le Vision Pictures.
Among the other standout nominees are Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer” with 7 nominations, “The Lunchbox” with 6 nominations, “Stray Dogs” and “Like Father, Like Son” with 5 nominations each. Ilo Ilo, which last week claimed the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan earned 4 nominations.
In addition, prizes for best short film and outstanding achievement will be announced at the award ceremony on Dec. 15.

I kinda feared the list would look like that. I`ve seen all the movies, except Unbeatable which is hopefully very soon in my mailbox and this one gets mostly very positive response. _________________ Water which is too pure has no fish. |

Wouldn't it be sweet justice if TL got an Oscar nod for Best Actor? (if Roberto Benigni can do it, TL can do it.)
I'm sick and tired of him being snubbed by 'local' awards and critics. _________________ There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about.

Me too .
I think they unfairly apply much higher standards to Tony
BTW, The Grandmaster just won The Denver Film Critics Society BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM Today . The other 4 nominated films are “The Great Beauty” “The Hunt” “Blue is the Warmest Color” and “The Broken Circle Breakdown”. |

Tony's role in "The Grandmaster" is not the sort of role that gets nominated for acting awards. It may have been the most difficult film he's done, but that's because of the physical requirements. The film isn't focused on his emotional journey. There isn't much of a character arch for him. If he ever should've been nominated for something, it should've been "2046" or "Lust, Caution," (though personally, I think the former performance more fitting than the latter for such recognition).
Until Asian scriptwriters are more concerned with character, than plot, Asian actors will continued to be undervalued by the West, and that's a damn shame, when we know full-well, the best Asian actors can go head to head with the best "known" great actors in the world. _________________ "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.
