LOS ANGELES exclusive dialogue

Alan Mak VS Felix Chong

LOS ANGELES: << hear the wind by the charm of the story >> What is it?

Jimmy Chong: I think it is a lost era of .1950's newly liberated, we are immersed in the construction of a new Chinese atmosphere, full of hope that the foreign experts for home construction, but which some Longshehunza the place, which do out of the conflict is a lot of conflict depth.

LOS ANGELES: 'hear the wind by >> the background story is very real, historical depth, the background of the history of the film will have more showing you?

LOS ANGELES: two past the men play play more, the proportion of Spy Game play and emotional play about what?

Jimmy Chuang: integration into some modern concepts such as Mavis played the wife of Tony, you can imagine that the next Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Zhou Xun, Mavis is the relationship between the triangular relationship? I tell you, is not he and Zhou Xun is not love happen. We would like to say a very modern feeling, each person has loved some of the people who do not love you? How do you do? Hate him? Forget him? Want to forget more forget, every day, but also to meet how to do? when you encounter a new person, you like her, that you play with the feelings of the people? how do you face this?, how to face the previously loved? is very subtle feelings, not feelings directly.

LOS ANGELES: Tony Leung and Zhou Xun in fact, in the large magician >> just worked, and why this time to find their co-operation?

Jimmy Chuang: <<-Kuan >> already written, the synopsis of 'hear the wind >> of time have identified the two of them. << Magician >> heroine Cecilia Cheung, Houli have a little problem can not play, Derek Yee was in a hurry, come and asked if we have any good suggestions, we had no opinion, although we think Zhou Xun the most suitable. Later, he thought Zhou Xun, and asked our good We are very embarrassed, and said is not (because our play has been delineated Zhou Xun, and has been in contact), not so good enough friends later or loyalty to overcome the selfish (laughs), we agreed that when he do not know that we use Zhou Xun later learned also helped us to pull strings with Zhou Xun, to large magician >> crew visit the set with Zhou Xun Tan Derek Yee find Zhou Xun play when the << Big magician >> Zhou Xun also thought it was when the director, all the chaos. later learned that the two play.

LOS ANGELES: The script Tony mentioned any comments? Seems << >> hurt the city when he participated in the process of script revisions.

Jimmy Chuang: << Confession >> him to mention the many, many views. He should be added to the the screenwriter List (laughs) In fact, he has opinions on, because by his speech, only he knows where should , where should not write, but this time no major changes, and soon he agreed, he said: 'I have played a blind, but also to study Mandarin, and basically turned into a dumb.' so he in advance is necessary endorsement lines, design interpretation of the way, so for him alone to take care of this role has been very busy, not air traffic control script (laughs).

LOS ANGELES: 'hear the wind by the style of the >> trailer feel very literary previous two commercial movie, why is there such a change?

Jimmy Chong: about the story, a great part of the story is sound, and now you see the picture, did not hear the true voice, after adding the rhythm will be very different, if you want to keep intact the sound of your lens is bound to long, through the clip to create rhythm, but to manufacture the lens inside the rhythm.

LOS ANGELES: two on one play << Overheard >> very successful at the box office reputation, have not learned experience?

Jimmy Chuang: << Overheard 2 >> strange, you see, it is a co-productions, but no element in the mainland may really be the Hong Kong director, for his expertise, like out to shoot things will feel more readily illustrate this movie still has much room for development, according to audience reaction, I think this type if the next shot, it can also end up a bit more complicated.

LOS ANGELES: Tony Leung once said that the film does not dealings with the Film people, why do the two meet him become friends?

Jimmy Chong: He is very funny, not what we imagined so cool, a lot of very difficult things in mind, but a lot to talk about. May be because we can tolerate him speaking (laughs) We talk about everything about movies, talking about book when more and also to talk about music.

PS, I put the original Chinese article into Google Translate - it came out exactly as such. I must say it is almost all lost in translation. Sad However, knowing the releasing date is enough for now.

At last - a coherent version!

http://hktopten.blogspot.com/2012/03/20120321-tony-leung-chiu-wai-tells-alan.html

Alan Mak Siu Fai and Felix Chong Man Keung yesterday attended their new film THE SILENT WAR (TING FUNG JEH)'s press conference. The film will be released in August. Although leads Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Zhou Xun were both absent, they have already made time to promote. The directors admitted that Wai Jai was indeed somewhat hard to schedule, luckily they were buddies and often gave him scripts in private. Wai Jai also liked movies that were both intense yet relaxed and the characters human. So over 10 years they have worked together on 4 films already.

The directors planned to start work on OVERHEARD 3 (SIT TING FUNG WON 3) and hopefully with the original team. As for adding Wai Jai, they said, "No, but we have discussed other projects with Wai Jai. He even urged us to hurry up."

That's more like it. Thanks Jamaica Very Happy

They're discussing new projects yay! I hope these are thrillers in similar vein as 'Overheard' which is proving to be a successful franchise.

I really want to see TL in a corporate/political thriller where he is not a detective or a cop and where he gets to wear, say, Prada suits for a change.

I'd like to see a noir-ish detective/private eye film, (been watchin' "Chinatown," again - lol), and also definitely some great character pieces, where the characters drive the plot, rather than the plot drive the characters. "Three Summers" was kind of in that vein, and I think of Zhang Yimou's and Chen Kaige's stuff, or the best of the American independent films. Hardly anybody is challenging him the way DeNiro, or Sean Penn gets challenged, and Tony's got the chops for it, and hardly gets the chance to do it. It drives me crazy, and he ain't gettin' any younger. Most films are written for characters in their 20's - 30's. It's probably the reason Tony told Alan and Felix to hurry it up. Lol!

TL's desire to keep working with the apparently less-demanding Mak and Chong would also bolster his 'announcement' that he "will take a break from working with WKW".
I think working with WKW for the nth time has so drained TL physically, emotionally and creatively that "a break" really means never.

Hopefully, AM and FC will "hurry up" and get one of those projects in the can by next year. And if we're lucky, we might even see that film before The Grandmasters heh heh...

I made an attempt to put the article Jamaica posted a few days ago in a more understandable way. Although the English is still poor, I hope it is semi-meaningful to non-Chinese readers. Very Happy

On March 20th, the press conference of the spy war movie "The Silent War (Windseeker)", adapted from Mak Jia’ novel and starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Zhou Xun, was held in Hong Kong. Screenwriter/director Alan Mak and Felix Chong announced to the press that the movie is scheduled to release on August 10th in Mainland China.
It will be different from "The Message" and "Lust, Caution"
¬“The Silent War” will be Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s new project since “Overheard 2”. The first trailer was shown at the press conference, it’s exquisite visual style and spy war elements reminds people movies with similar topic such as "Lust, Caution" and "The Message".
Also adapted from Mak Jia’ novel, "The Message" was a winner of both box office and critics. At the time when Alan Mak watched "The Message", he was secretly hoping to have a Hong Kong director to make a movie of similar subject - making "The Silent War” will be his dream coming true. Felix Chong said that their new movie will be different from all three movies mentioned above – it will mainly focus on touch of humanity under a complex background during that period of time. He also praised his two leading actors, Tony Leung and Zhou Xun, that they are capable of producing a "1 +1 = 3"effect.
Tony made 10 movies in the past 10 years, and 4 of them are in collaboration with Mak and Chong
Mak/Chong: We are predestined
Mak, Chong and Tony are good friends. Once chatting over a diner, they realized that Tony only made10 movies in the past 10 years, and they made 4 of them together. In addition to “The Silent War”, the other 3 are “Infernal Affairs I and III”, plus “Confession of Pain”. Felix Chong even said that regardless of the scale of a movie project, they always think about having Tony to act in it first. However, because of Tony’s busy schedule, they only just found opportunity to collaborate with him again. They found out Tony had a break during filming of "The Grandmasters", so they showed Tony their script in private and finalized this collaboration.
Initially, they thought Feng Xiaogang (a mainland director) would be ideal to play the blind Bing
“The Silent War” is a story about the spy game involving secret agent "701" in the early 1950th. Tony plays blind Bing, who has an unusual hearing ability. Zhou Xun plays a female secret agent Zhang Xuening. They are colleagues but the two also have emotional entanglements. After the press conference, the directors had an exclusive conversation with Sina; they revealed that Mavis Fan plays Tony's wife in the movie. The relationship among Tony, Zhou Sun and Mavis Fan is a not an ordinarily triangular type one can imagine (see following for details).
Felix Chong said that when he read the novel 10 years ago, he imagined to have Feng Xiaogang playing Bing. However, when time came to cast for Bing, he did not dare to contact Feng Xiaogang. "It’s impossible, I do not know his price, I didn’t even discuss this with him", he said. But Chong said that he appreciated Feng Xiaogang’s acting skills very much in movies like “Sunny Day" and "Tongmeng Qi Yuan".
Since they could not let Tony to appear as a Feng Xiaogang look alike, the directors adjusted Bing's character accordingly, "we rebuilt his character as a small fry (some kind of low life nobody) in Shanghai before liberation, and he was classified as 'Black Five' (the five classes of people considered by the government to be disgraced) after liberation. Hence, this role adjustment made Bing a different type of human being." The directors also joked: "we Hong Kong people are good at portraying small fry type of people". Zhou Xun already played a female spy in the movie “The Message". According to Felix Chong, the difference between the two spy roles is: she played a “younger sister” in “The Message", and an "older sister" in “The Silent of War”.
In response to controversy of "The Lost Bladesman": we read too many books published in Taiwan
Following “The Lost Bladesman”, "The Silent War” is yet another movie made by Mak and Chong based on mainland background. Their re-interpretation of the history of Three Kingdom for the previous movie was heavily controversial; the box office was less than ideal. Their response to this is that they "read too many books published in Taiwan”, and they promise that their new movie will be more agreeable to the knowledge of mainland viewer because “they bought their reference books from Xinhua Bookstore in mainland".
[Reveling Tony Leung personal lifestyle]
People are very curious about Tony’s real life since his "feeding pigeon” lifestyle became extremely popular on the Internet. Felix Chong revealed three stories about Tony’s personal life at the press conference.
1 [Very crazy about acting] He talks about movies with me everyday: every time when I visited him at his hotel room, he would say "Take a look, I just tried another way to act".
2 [Very close to the people] He went running alone (without bodyguards) in a park everyday during filming in Shanghai. And he made friends with those elderly people who were there doing morning exercise. Every person at the park ticketing booth knows him, they would say: “Mr. Leung, one ticket for entrance?"
3 [Very @ # ¥% ...] Once he went home at 3 am but forgot to bring his wallet. I asked him afterwards: "how did you go home?" He said, "I walked home." This is a true story - he really walked back to his hilltop home. (Why didn’t he find somebody to pick him up?) Perhaps he didn’t want to bother other people - he doesn’t like causing troubles to the others.
SINA exclusive interview with Mak and Chong
SINA: What is the attraction of the story of “The Silent War”?
Mak/Chong: We think the story occurred in a period of lost. In 1950, China was just liberated; everybody was immersed in an atmosphere of rebuilding a new China. People were having lots of hopes; experts were coming back from foreign countries to join this rebuilding effort of their homeland. However, the reality is that the society was very complicated at that time; there were lots of conflicting issues. These conflicting issues bring out the depth of our movie.
SINA: The background of “The Silent War” was based on a real historic period that was very deep. Is this film going to show a lot of historical facts?
Mak/Chong: The story occurred inside of a secret agency. People always think spy world is a separate world, and we do not talk about politics.
SINA: You spent a lot time working on the script of "Confession of Pain". Did the script for “The Silent of War” go smoothly?
Mak/Chong: Very smooth – we simply wrote key points during filming of "The Lost Bladesman” and we started our preparation immediately after shooting. For “Confession of Pain", we had trouble finding the central focus and we kept searching for it.
SINA: Most of your past movies were mainly dealing with male characters. What is the proportion in your new movie dealing with spy war vs. human relationship?
Mak/Chong: It is a mixture with some contemporary concept. For example, Mavis Fan plays Tony's wife, so what can you imagine about the relationship among Tony and Zhou Xun, Mavis Fan? Is it a triangular type of relationship? I tell you, it is not. There was no love relationship developed between him and Zhou Xun. We wanted to express a very contemporary emotion, such as a person once loved someone else who doesn’t love you. What do you do when this happens? Do you hate him or try to forget him? The more you want to forget the more you remember; especially with a person you see each other everyday. Now you encounter a newcomer and you also like her (him? It’s her in Chinese). Are you that kind of person who toys with people’s emotion? How do you deal with this newcomer, and how to face the one you loved before? These are very delicate and indirect feelings.
SINA: Tony Leung and Zhou Xun just worked together in “The Great Magician”, why do you pair them again?
Mak/Chong: In fact, we wrote the synopsis of the "The Silent War" during filming of "The Lost Bladesman” and we wanted to have these two to play the lead. Cecilia Cheung was set to play the heroine in "The Great Magician" at that time. However, there were some problems and she couldn’t play that part. Derek Yee was desperate; he even came and asked us to give some good suggestions. We said that we had no suggestions, even though we thought Zhou Xun would be most suitable for his movie. Later on, Derek thought of Zhou Xun himself, and came asking our opinion. It’s awkward, we couldn’t say that she’s good (because we had been contacting Zhou Xun to play in our movie); nor we could say no - this betrays our friendship. At the end, friendship wins over selfishness (laughter); we both said that Zhou Xun would be a good choice for him. At that time, he did not know that we were going to use Zhou Xun too. But later when he learned our intention, he invited us to visit "The Great Magician" set, and tried to help us connecting with Zhou Xun. When Zhou Xun started to shoot "The Great Magician", it was so chaotic because she thought we were the directors. She only learned later that there were two independent movies.
SINA: Did Tony make any comments on the current script? He was involved in the revision process for "Confession of Pain".
Mak/Chong: He expressed a lot of opinions for "Confession of Pain"; he should’ve been included in the screenwriter list (laughs). It’s normal that he has opinions, because he is the performer. Only he knows the best about which part should be emphasized and which should be omitted. There are no major changes this time, he quickly agreed on the script. He said: "I am playing a blind man speaking in Mandarin; this basically turned me into a mute." So he was memorizing lines, designing and interpreting his character way in advance. He’s too busy to take care of his role and had no time to control the script (laughs).
SINA: The trailer of "The Silent War" has a feel of art-house movie. Why make such a change because you two used to be making commercial movies?
Mak/Chong: This has everything to do with the story: a great part of the story is about sound. What you see in the movie is screen images; you are not listening to the true sound. If you want to keep the original sound, you have to use long shot in order to maintain certain rhythm. This rhythm cannot be created through editing, so we create the rhythm through our lens.
SINA: Hoe do you summarize your good experience of making your previous movie "Overheard 2”, which was successful both at the box office as well as by critics?
Mak/Chong: Making "Overheard 2" is rather a strange experience, it is a co-production but it doesn’t contain any mainland element. This type probably fits the expertise of Hong Kong directors. We like to go outside of Hong Kong to make movies, and it feels more refreshing. There is more room to develop this type of movies. If we do it again, I think we can make a more complex film next time based on past response of audiences.
SINA: Tony Leung once said that he doesn’t mingle with people in the film industry when he is not shooting movies. How come you two are good friends of his?
Mak/Chong: He is very funny, and he is not that type of cool people imagined about him. He doesn’t mind a lot of things, and he is very talkative. We are friends is because we probably can tolerate his nonstop talking (laughs). We talk about everything, most of the time we talk about movies and books, but we also talk about music.
