Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and unfortunately, I discovered Tony only a few months ago. But I've been making up for lost time and have now seen 50 of his films and TV shows. And I've learned a lot about him by reading the pages and forum posts on this website.

I'd love it if anyone would be willing to answer some questions about Tony, which I'm sure are old hat to most of you--remember, I'm new to the Tony world! Thank you in advance for your help!

1. I know he's called Wai Jai, and others are referred to as "Fat Jai", "Wah Jai", etc. I speak only English--what does "Jai" mean?

2. Did Tony have any contact with his father after his father left the family? I assume he has died--how old was Tony then? Is Tony close to his sister?

3. How much is he paid per film these days? Does he ever receive a percentage of the profits of his films? (This is common for major U.S. movie actors, but I don't know if it's done in the Chinese/HK film industry.)

4. What part of HK does he live in? I understand Carina owns four homes--do they divide their time among them?

5. I've seen some of his charity ads, and postings in this forum about his participation in charity events. Does he donate a lot of money to charity, and does he do a lot of charity work? Does he have favorite causes?

6. Does he sing in public anymore? It looks like his last CD release was in 2002, so I assume he concentrates only on acting now.

7. Does anyone know anything about his political beliefs?

8. How well does he speak Mandarin? Does he speak other languages in addition to English?

9. I'm astounded by the intrusive personal questions that the media ask Tony and Carina, and even more astounded that they answer many of the questions, instead of telling the press it's none of their business. Do the HK media treat all HK celebrities this way?

Thanks again for your answers!

Hi cbnw,

Welcome to join this family! It's really impressive to watch 50 movies of Tony in just a few months! Which movie is the first one that attracted you to Tony?

Regarding your questions, I tried my best to answer, but I don't know some of the answers too...

1. "Jai" means "boy" in Cantonese. When we called someone's name followed by "Jai", it's kind of a nickname.

2. Tony's father passed away a few years ago. Tony is close to his sister.

3. No idea

4. Tony lives in the Peak area on Hong Kong Island.

5. No idea

6. Tony seldom sings in public nowadays

7. No idea

8. His Mandarin is good. He doesn't speak other languages other than English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

9. Yes, that's common in Hong Kong.

Safran and Info, thanks for your replies.

I think I first saw Tony in "Lust, Caution," and although I was impressed with his performance, I didn't become really interested until after I'd seen "Flowers of Shanghai" and then "In the Mood for Love." His brilliant work in "Happy Together" turned the interest into obsession.

He is such a superb actor and I wish he was offered a greater variety of roles.

I have another question that has to do with HK names. In interviews on the DVDs, I've heard Wong Kar Wai and others refer to Tony both as Tony and as Chiu Wai. Is the use of one or the other any indication of the closeness of a relationship? When is one or the other name used, or is it unimportant?

Thanks again. I love learning anything about Tony.
