PostPosted: Tue Apr 17, 2012 6:07 am    Post subject: ....and A Little More on Grandmasters' Release

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel-gets-closer-as-wong-kar-wais-the-grandmaster-gets-december-18th-chinese-release-date-20120417

It's five years since the last film from the great Chinese director Wong Kar-Wai. It's eight since his last Chinese-language film, "2046." And depending on your tolerance for the latter, it's twelve since his last great film, "In The Mood For Love." But Kar-Wai has such a hugely impressive body of work behind him -- from "Ashes Of Time" to "Chungking Express" -- that anything he does will have a fever-pitch of anticipation behind it, and that only seems to get greater the longer he takes with his latest project, "The Grandmaster."
A biopic of legendary martial artist Ip Man (Tony Leung), a legendary master of Wing Chun who taught Bruce Lee, among many others, the film also stars Zhang Ziyi, Chen Chang and Song Hye-Ko and began filming two-and-a-half years ago, in December 2009. But in true Wong fashion, the epic shoot lasted for nearly two years, on-and-off (shooting was still taking place late last year and there is more to come -- more on that in a moment). There was no sign of the film at Cannes last year, and all we have to prove that the film actually exists is a teaser trailer that premiered nearly 18 months ago.

But recently, signs have started to arrive that we might be seeing the film before the year is out, with Chinese distributor Bona Film revealing that it should land at the end of 2012, and rumors that an official Chinese release date would be revealed imminently. And indeed it has been, as Kevin Ma (@TheGoldenRock), a writer for the site LoveHKFilm, has received the official announcement from the distributor that the film will hit mainland China on December 18, 2012, over three years after filming got underway .

This probably means that U.S. audiences will not get to see it before 2013: Wong's films have traditionally opened in China long before they come to the West, and while Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures has the rights, there's no distributor proper attached at present (although the Weinstein Company would probably be a good bet, given the close relationship between the two companies). If we're very lucky, we may get a brief Academy-qualifying run, as Zhang Yimou's "The Flowers Of War" did last year, but even that's likely to be touch-and-go.

While this announcement is curiously close to Thursday's reveal of the Cannes Film Festival line-up, don't hold your breath for the "The Grandmasters" making an appearance even if the last four films from Wong Kar-Wai had their premiere there. Reports out of Asian media in recent days have revealed that the last round of filming on "The Grandmaster" will take place in May, pretty much ruling out any trip to the south of France. So in short, looks like we won't be seeing this for ourselves until 2013.

Thanks Jamaica for the article Very Happy .
Still a long way to wait if the date is going to be really true (even this is announced by the officials at movie studios). BTW, I was amused when looked at those postmarks on the pic - locations and dates are all over the place (from 1911(?) @ Mukden to 1954 @ Hong Kong) and the date on the master/pupils pic was dated 1950.8.1. Wonder what is the significance about them. Question Is this film going to across half a century? Rolling Eyes

I would guess the places and dates, with the picture, are there for a reason. Yip Man got around in his life, moving to Hong Kong from Foshan as a teenager, then returning to Foshan in his early twenties, and serving as a policeman. He left Foshan during the war (unlike what is depicted in "Ip Man"), returned after the war, working, again as a policeman, and then once the PRC was established, (he had served in the Kuomintang during Chinese Civil War), left for Hong Kong.

Perhaps WKW really IS going to do a true bio pic on Yip Man. I had had my doubts, from what I'd read, up till now..... but half a century can easily be crossed through Yip Man's lessons to his students, and you know how WKW loves to explore memory, and the passage of time. The exaggerated fight scene of the trailer could be an example of how Yip's students see their master's "parables" in their imagination, so there can be that mix of Yuen Woo-Ping wire-fu, and the realism of WKW, easily co-existing. What I'm wondering is if WKW is going to touch on Yip Man's opium addiction? Maybe that's where the exaggerated fight scene of the trailer comes from....?

Wow, Jamaica you know so much about Ip Man thumbright . I need to make it up with a book or two.
Tony and Carina both just re-transmitted the pic/announcement above on their Chinese equivalent of Twitter Accounts. Carina commented "It's up to you to believe or not (releasing date)". Tony's posting marks his first return to this account since his last one almost 2 years ago. cheers

"Wow, Jamaica you know so much about Ip Man."

It's simply the magic of Wikipedia! (Although I do love Donnie Yen's "Ip Man" movies - not to mention Jet Li's Wong Fei Hung flicks. Both Ip Man and Wong Fei Hung were from Fo Shan.)

Lol! Loved Carina's comment about the release date. I think her husband has been held hostage long enough! Wink

Don't know about you guys, but I really liked how this Daily Motion poster put this particular music with the trailer for "The Grandmasters." I think it really presents the scenes in a more dynamic fashion than the music actually being used. (Yes, it's kinda cheesy, hip-hop is overused, but the defined beat, mixed with the traditional Asian music, added to the images, gives the traditional story a modern energy. I loved the score RZA gave Jim Jarmusch's "Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai" film. It worked wonderfully! I think this does, too. Certainly more interesting than the actual music used in the trailer - this makes the images pop off the screen.)

If not an appearance, at least an advertisement...
And what a grand poster!

I love the slogan. I wonder if it's an Ip Man quote or just a production tagline.

Thanks yitian for the massive photo Smile

Cannes Planning Surprise Screening Of Non-Fest Films; What’s On The List?
By NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor | Tuesday, 22 May 2012 UK

EXCLUSIVE: In a move that would amount to the Cannes Film Festival‘s very own clip reel of unfinished upcoming movies, Deadline has heard that a screening of footage from select films will take place in an official venue on Thursday. Details are scarce, but pics that could be in the surprise pack include Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Impossible, the tsunami movie starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, and Wong Kar Wai’s martial arts bio The Grandmasters. Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master might also be included, although the Weinsteins showed footage from those films last night. Other films are expected to be in the mix for what we hear will be an hourlong showing that will be open to all accredited fest attendees. This is a new move for the festival and could drum up some extra heat. The screening, Deadline understands, will take place at the Salle du Soixantičme — the same venue where the roof was damaged by heavy winds the other day. Only this time, the festival will look to blow the roof off on purpose.
