Hi Safran,
I like Ken Loach’s films, too. “Looking for Eric” was introduced in Japan at TIFF2009 but no general release is scheduled, yet. Crying or Very sad

We're going to see 'Up in the Air' on Wednesday...should be good.

I’m looking forward to watching” Up in the Air” by Jason Reitman but I have to wait until March.
I like his "Juno" and "Thank you for Smoking" too.

I just saw “ (500) Days of Summer” by Marc Webb. A very good script!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

My two fave films of '09 couldn't be more different:

Red Cliff
Departures

Another fave was not a movie but a Korean TV drama called "IRIS".

"Hey Joe" ! haha

Unfortunately I had no chance to watch "Red Cliff" yet -
Did you watch the cutted western version or the asian original in 2 parts ?(in Forum there were much discussions roundabout last year)

Takita Yojiro´s "Departures " (Okuribito) I like very much too.

But if you ment Scorsseses "Departed" - I definitely like the HK Lau/Mak original "Infernal Affaires" 1+2 with Tony much more (exciting) - though it might be a bit more complicated for us westeners first !

Please appologize my bad english - hope you understand

Greetings
Helga

Hi Helga,

I did mean "Departures". What an unsusal film that is! Very simple film making but very exquisitely done.

As for Red Cliff- I did watch the 2-part original.
I don't like to watch a TL movie in its Hollywood packaging, somehow it takes away from the original essence of the film.
I also don't like dubbing. I prefer to watch TL in his original voice (though I don't understand Cantonese) ; thus one can truly appreciate his great acting.
I'm fine with sub-titles.

Cheers Smile

Hi everyone,
I haven't been able to go online for a couple of weeks- whole family sick and support worker on vacation...

In last weekend of January I saw Mel Gibson's Edge of Darkness - not bad at all - Mel Gibson actually had to act. The story was full of twists and turns. He acted his age. Everything was fine except the fake Boston accent he was forced to use which was not necessary to the movie at all. Also, another actor in the movie who seemed to have a cockney accent was not understandable at all. Consider yourself lucky to have subtitles in this case!

Precious is still in movie theatres here in Mississauga Canada due to Oscar season - I hope to see that one on DVD and I would like to see the Hurt Locker too just to see what all the fuss is about - but I won't have time for a long while...

Dear movie-fans

Watched yesterday "Séraphine" (F/B/D 2009) D: Martin Provost - in Cinema

A beautiful quiet biography - the tragic life of femal painter Seraphine Louis ( called "Seraphine de Senlis")- living under poor conditions at the beginning of the last century.
Impressing Cinematography, Art Direction and Actors - (7 Césars)

BTW: Music from Michael Galasso (ITMFL) !

Folks seem to be in a movie-or-two-watching mood lately... so, thought I'd share this-
My order of old movies came recently (yahoo!) - so, a sort of TL Retro Filmfest is going on at home.

In the line up are old faves:
Lucky Encounter
People's Hero
Great Pretenders
The Royal Scoundrel
Happy Go Lucky
I Love Maria

What a very fitting way to celebrate the Chinese New Year, isn't it? Smile
