Infernal Affairs (2002)
An excellent, albeit slightly complicated gangster thriller directed by Alan Mak Siu Fai and Andrew Lau. This is the story of two opposing factions, the Hong Kong police and local Triads. Both soon sense that there are several moles in their respective organisations. The two main characters are Inspector Lau (Andy Lau), a gangster who has secretly been posing as a cop for several years and Inspector Yan (Tony Leung), a credible police officer, planted as a mole within the gang of much feared Triad boss, Sam (Eric Tsang). This is certainly not your usual wham-bam action film - Infernal Affairs is more intelligent by far. Yes, there is style with the film's few action scenes, but there is substance too, provided by the excellent performances of Leung and Lau (two of China's biggest superstars). The background score and cinematography are both stunning and poetic, while the direction and editing both flow nicely, with no unnecessary scenes. The plot is slightly overcomplicated, with several unpredictable twists in the tail. In conclusion, a must see for anyone in love with Chinese Cinema!
