The Electric New Paper

BHUTAN BASH & A LOVE DUET

Himalayan kingdom's culture is theme of Tony and Carina's wedding

IN scarlet and gold traditional Bhutanese costumes, the striking couple turned heads as they posed for their wedding photographs over the weekend.

22 July 2008

IN scarlet and gold traditional Bhutanese costumes, the striking couple turned heads as they posed for their wedding photographs over the weekend.

After a good 20 years together, Hong Kong movie stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai, 46, and Carina Lau, 43, finally tie the knot today at the Uma Paro hilltop resort in Bhutan.

It's a wedding that has whipped the Hong Kong media into a frenzy, but only 100 guests have been invited to the exclusive nuptials.

Among them is a who's who of Hong Kong entertainment, including Lin Ching-Hsia, Faye Wong and her family.

Bhutan's king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, 28, who was key in arranging for visas for some of the wedding guests, is also on the list.

WHITE TENTS

The wedding ceremony and party are to be held in two white tents in front of the hotel, a 15-minute drive from the airport.

The event clearly bears a strong Bhutanese theme, even though the couple are ethnic Chinese.

Wedding photographs which the couple took on Friday and Saturday saw the couple in traditional Bhutanese garb, known as the gol for men and the kira for women.

In addition, the white tents used for the ceremony are decorated with traditional Bhutanese symbols.

However, the bride is likely to stick to a more typical wedding gown for the ceremony today, according to Hong Kong newspapers.

They have reported that Carina will be clad in a Vera Wang gown and Roger Vivier high heels.

The luxurious nuptials will see guests dining on cuisine from the five-star resort, which is owned by Singapore hotelier Christina Ong.

At least 30 bottles of Moet and Chandon champagne will be consumed, said the media.

It was also reported that the couple are donating their wedding gifts to charity.

In the meantime, talk is rife that the couple will be serenaded today by Faye Wong. A duet by the couple is also likely, reported Apple Daily.

Ming Pao Daily News reported earlier that Faye had help the couple get through a rough patch early last year when Carina was linked to high-tech Taiwanese tycoon Terry Gou.

She and her husband took Carina and Tony to India to visit the Karmapa Lama. The Tibetan Buddhist leader moved them to tears with a few words.

The couple then decided to tie the knot.

The Karmapa also suggested Bhutan as a wedding venue, said Ming Pao.

Tony Leung & Carina Lau Wed

21 July 2008

Alex Au / Emma Lam

Tony Leung (梁朝偉) and Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) married in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan yesterday morning.

It has taken Tony, 46, and Carina, 42, nearly two decades to get to the altar.

The ceremony took place in the luxury Uma Paro hotel, which is situated in a hilly area. This aided the tight security as the main roads leading up to the hotel were closed off to anyone who was not on the guest list. Reporters were kept at bay and any who tried to evade the guards and hike up the hill through the woods were swiftly intercepted and ejected.

Guests, including Faye Wong (王菲), Brigitte Lin (林青霞), Kenny Bee (鍾鎮濤), Chang Chen (張震), Cecilia Yip (葉童) and Stanley Kwan (關錦鵬), began arriving from around 9am to attend the ceremony. A busload of young lamas was then sighted leaving the area in the early afternoon.

Although the couple did everything to maintain privacy for their special day, they were still very understanding of the waiting press and issued official release photographs to share their happy day with the media and all their fans throughout the world. The photographs showed Tony and Carina wearing their matching ivory wedding outfits for the main ceremony and Carina's red Gucci dress that she wore during the evening reception.

A representative was also sent out in the evening with some cake and champagne for the waiting reporters. The spokesperson reported that the ceremony had taken place in two parts – the first being a traditional Buddhist ceremony that is officially recognised as a marriage in Bhutan. For the second part, Carina showed off her 12 carat Cartier wedding ring, worth over HK$10 million, as she cut her five-tiered wedding cake with Tony.

Tony Leung and Carina Lau gets married - July 20, 2008

Tony Leung and Carina Lau will get married today in Bhutan under the arrangements and assistance by the Royal Family of Bhutan. They broke the traditions and used the royal palace's sleeping room as a background of their wedding photographs. The prince and his wife of Bhutan have also helped the newly weds put on the traditional royal attires of Bhutan. The royal families' help is down to the very last detail. Tony Leung and Carina Lau sure have gotten alot of prestiges!

The Royal Family assisted their preparation of the wedding

After Tony and Carina have arrived to Bhutan, they hurried to shoot their wedding photographs. Not only did the royal family gave assistance in all ways, they even specially lent them their palace for the wedding photographs! The prince and his wife had even personally helped Tony and Carina to put on the royal attires. In one of the photographs,Carina Lau was wearing the royal attire and holding flowers in her hands. Auspicious Jade pieces were worn on her right hand. Tony wore the men's royal robe. It is said that the robe that Tony had wore was being worn by the prince when he got married, and Carina's attire was also worn by one of the consorts before. The royal family had thought that is is fate that Tony and Carina chose their place for the location of the wedding,so they provided unconditional assistance to them,to hope that they have a successful marriage and last forever.

Of all places,Why Bhutan?

Tony and Carina were very grateful to the treatments they received from the royal family. Carina had disclosed that she had already agreed with Tony since last year that their wedding will be the 21st of July. The decision to have their wedding in Bhutan was only decided 3 months ago. Carina said "We have thought of many locations to hold our marriage.France,Florence,Paris,Japan and SouthEast Asia have been thought of,but it seems that something is lacking, until we found Bhutan. The both of us thought that this is the ideal place to hold our marriage."

Carina also said that she first know about Bhutan about 10 years ago and never thought that she start her next part of life there. She was attracted by the city as it has no pollutions. Being a devoted Buddhist, she said that staying in Bhutan these past few days have made her realize that happiness does not come from a matter,or wealth. True happiness is the contended in the mind, hence,Carina decided to hold her wedding in this "Happy Kingdom" of Bhutan.

Wedding in 2 parts

The wedding today will be divided into 2 parts. The ceremony will be done in the afternoon while the dinner and party will be conducted in the night. The guests and family members have already gathered at the hotel yesterday night to have a "Farewell Singlehood" party for Tony and Carina. The Tony that frequently wore western suit have worn the traditional clothes of Bhutan yesterday. While Carina Lau had worn the a big and shiny diamond on her ears. When they appeared, they received applause from all the people. The theme of the farewell party is traditional Bhuan clothes and attires. To get into the theme,Carina have went to the market place in the city to search for suitable clothes to get engrossed and say farewell for her singlehood.

Where is Eric Tsang?

Eric Tsang could not appear the wedding as he was hosting the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant and have a job later. Being unable to attend the wedding,he said "Its so bad!" It was Eric that introduced the Bhutan Prince to Carina,Eric said that the Price will arrange and organise the wedding in the highest honor and glory. "When i knew that Carina decided to get married in Bhutan,i immediately called the prince. Its a coincidence that the Prince was in Hong Kong,so i arrange him to meet with Carina and Tony." (What gifts have you prepared for the newly weds?) "I requested the prince to arrange,to have a surprise for the couples...hmm..maybe asking a thousand monks to pray for them!" The make up artiste , ZING,will be doing make up for Carina for the wedding. He disclosed that he would use the wetlook makeup for Carina. He said "The feeling of having a wet and shiny face in the morning, may not be beautiful. However it is the most important that she looked FRESH!"

Cecilia won't "tease" and play the bride

Cecilia Yip was present at the Farewell Singlehood party yesterday. The newly weds thanked the family and friends for take time to travel Bhutan for their wedding.

Cecilia Yip revealed that the wedding today will be divided to 2 sections. In the afternoon, there will be monks to host the wedding ceremonies of the couples and the dinner party will be taking place in the night. The hosts asked the guest to prepare 2 sets of clothes at night. The bride will be having 5 sets of clothes for the dinner party. Asked Cecilia if she would tease the bride, she laughs and said "I am an adult,so i don't? The guests are all mature,so the wedding should only have a warm and emotional scene."

*For guests and family members to tease the newly weds is a chinese tradition, during the wedding, the couples have to listen and obey the guests' request when they are being teased.

Security was tight

The wedding of Tony Leung and Carina have attracted many reporters and paparazzis to Bhutan. To get the very first pictures of their wedding, the reporters will use alot of tricks. The hotel that Carina and Tony is staying has got very tight securities. The reporters can't get good angles to shoot their pictures even when they made a turn and went to the high platform to shoot. They even found security guards guarding the area after they were quite a distance from the hotel.

Red Card!

The hotel that the guests stayed have also strict and tight securities. Even before the reporters got down their car, they were asked "Do you have a Pass? If you film again, you have to take out the film in the camera !" The management company had earlier gave each and every guest and family members a piece of "red card" to pass the security check. The managements have also used the "Stanley Team" which is a specialise artiste protection team to protect the privacy and safety of the artists. The police in Bhutan have also assisted all the safety and security operations.

From Mingpao :

It is said that Faye Wong will be singing in the wedding party to dedicate her wishes to best friend Carina Lau. When being asked about that, she said "I will not say anything here, instead,i will send my wishes to Carina personally." Faye Wong also denied that she will be singing. Another guest, Stanley Kwan said "I am touched and happy at the same time, this day has been long waited." Stanley Kwan gave gold accessories to Carina as a wedding gift. In the Mood for Bhutan

Hi,

This is for everyone who called/e-mailed/instant messaged today asking for more information about Carina and Tony’s wedding.

Very glad that the IHT found space to run the story in today’s paper, but to satisfy all the inquiring minds out there, here is a slightly expanded version of the IHT story with quotes from Carina and Chang Chen as well as assorted trivia about the wedding.

I'll try to reply to questions and comments when I can. Meanwhile, enjoy…

Xx
Alex.

In the Mood for Bhutan

By Alexandra A. Seno
alexandraseno.blogspot.com

The bride, just like so many women about to be married, hoped for what she called “a quiet, solemn and romantic wedding.” Except she is the A-list Hong Kong actress Carina Lau Kar-ling and the groom is Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Chinese cinema’s biggest dramatic star. They say their vows today, Monday, July 21, at the Uma Paro hotel in Bhutan after a relationship that stood up to decades of popular scrutiny and almost 20 years as a couple.

While Lau will probably still be able to remember her wedding day as the stuff of dreams, the Chinese media frenzy around it has been anything but quiet or solemn. Since the incomparably tenacious Chinese entertainment press discovered the once-secret wedding locale on Monday, July 14, in typical fashion, the industry deployed considerable human and financial resources to cover the Chinese entertainment world’s marriage of the century.

Dozens of reporters and photographers, and hundreds of thousands of dollars have relentlessly pursued the wedding party and their guests through three cities including Paro, in the remote Himalayan hills where the Buddhist ceremony will be held.

The booming Chinese entertainment media sector has proven not only profitable but also more competitive than ever. The five top-selling magazines in Hong Kong focus on pop culture and like the rest of the industry, sell 95% of their copies on newsstands. Snapshots of Lau, 42, and Leung, 46, as well as facts and fiction about their upcoming marriage have dominated front pages in the last week. The pair famously worked on classic Wong Kar Wai films like 1990’s “Days of Being Wild,” and this year’s “Ashes of Time Redux.”

Before her wedding day, in an e-mail exchange, Lau who was in Paro said: “I felt a little uncomfortable with all the attention. My intention all along is to keep the wedding low profile and share this special moment with Tony, our family and friends. I was hoping to share this news and joy with everyone after we come back. Of course, I realize we are both public figures and cannot hide. I want to thank the media friends for working very hard in the past few days and for the good wishes.”

The diplomatic language aside, in keeping with Lau’s desire for a private moment, the press has not been invited to the wedding, even as throngs continue to stake the couple and their friends. The bride, who won a prestigious Golden Rooster acting prize last year for “Curiousity Killed the Cat,” denied that landlocked Bhutan, which only allowed television in 1999 and continues to impose a complicated visitor visa process, was chosen mainly for its isolation.

The date was set at the end of last year, when they decided to wed. Lau originally considered France, Italy and Japan until a friend suggested Bhutan, which she visited for four days last month and loved. “I long to live the simple and peaceful life of the Bhutanese people. The place is so peaceful and quiet,” she said.

Paro remains relatively peaceful despite the media onslaught and the lengths the reporters have gone to get their story. By Wednesday, July 16, they found out the wedding party’s travel details. Leung’s management company believes at least six were on the flight from Hong Kong and one photographer attempted to take a picture of the couple, curtailed by airline staff. At least 20 trailed the group in Bangkok where they had dinner before flying to the Himalayan kingdom.

One reporter is believed to have obtained the difficult-to-get and expensive Bhutan visa by applying in Russia. At the end of last week, several Hong Kong reporters were in Paro and many have spent a lot of time mainly lurking on roadsides hoping to snap images. On Friday, hotel security removed at least eight Hong Kong journalists who entered the premises of the luxury, Singaporean-owned Uma Paro. Some of the bridal party are billeted and the main wedding events will be held at the 20-room, 9-villa hilltop resort.

“Chinese entertainment media are very, very aggressive and are willing to dole out money to get the job done,” says Yuen-ying Chan, director of the University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre. While she doesn’t encourage her graduates to build careers in the genre, she acknowledges the publications are “hugely successful.” Facts are often not the main elements for these stories, as the Lau-Leung wedding is proving, just the photograph. Chan says: “If they don’t have the facts, they use their imagination. It is entertainment and readers are nosy by nature.”

(The groom’s management company declares several tidbits in the tabloids and on the Internet to be fictional. Among them that the India-based Karmapa Lama will officiating at the ceremony, that two private jets ferried guests to Bhutan – Leung and Lau went commercial in fact, and that the wedding cost HK$10 million.)

Chan notes that the “Hong Kong style” in pop culture reporting has been a role model for the booming mainland media. She says: “In China, politics is sensitive and the government is more tolerant of soft news.” Local pop culture-oriented publications do “dramatically well” with advertisers, which is why the segment is growing, according to Vivek Couto, head of research at Media Partners Asia, a boutique consultancy.

“Hong Kong doesn't really have much real hard news, so entertainment is very important. The field is very crowded so we have to do what we can.” says Mark Simon, group advertising director for NextMedia, owner of three of the territory’s five top-selling magazines. Partly because of their Taiwan revenues have grown and partly because their publications do well financially, NextMedia, listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, reported that earnings for 2007 were up 32% and profit 52%.

“Competition is fierce. Advertisers love entertainment news. So what if some guy is sleeping with some girl – the beer and cosmetic brands don’t care if you put them beside the story,” says Simon. Unlike in Europe and the US, most Chinese paparazzi work on staff for publications and not motivated by the potential earnings from a single photo. Hong Kong is one of the world’s most crowded media markets where hundreds of publications serve 7 million residents. On the weekend, NextMedia’s publications ran candid shots from Paro.

The wedding of Lau and Leung, star of Ang Lee’s recent, critically acclaimed movie “Lust, Caution,” is irresistable to the Chinese entertainment press, also because of the personalities involved. As a friend of the couple, Hong Kong’s international award-winning art house filmmaker Wong Kar Wai signed up for an unprecedented and unpaid role: wedding planner.

Wong, in an e-mail, said that a bit like his ambiance-drenched films, he planned to work with music to set the mood. The closely guarded wedding program includes a traditional tea ceremony for the bride, groom and their mothers on Monday morning, followed by a Buddhist blessing at 11 am., then an Italian lunch, capped by cocktails and a barbeque buffet in the evening. Sakul Intakul, florist to the Thai queen, designed the décor which incorporates bamboo with blooms flown in from Bangkok.

Depending on the weather, Wong said he intended to use tunes ranging from Mendelssohn to Stan Getz, Chinese pop diva (and wedding guest) Faye Wong, to Sergio Mendes. The director’s frequent collaborator, film editor and creative director William Chang Suk-ping, has been doing visual direction for the event in Bhutan and found Lau’s ivory Vera Wang dress in Hong Kong.

The guest list of 140 includes luminaries like producer Nansun Shi, martial arts star Ti Lung and retired Taiwan actress Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia, who have all traveled to Bhutan.

Fresh from a round of golf and being hounded by telephoto-lens toting Chinese paparazzi, Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, a wedding guest, on Saturday in a phone interview, described the mood among the party in Paro to be generally relaxed despite the media hoopla.

Chang, who recently co-starred with Leung in John Woo’s Chinese box office record-making “Red Cliff,” was unsurprised that despite Bhutan’s isolation, so many – invited or not – should want to be part of the couple’s special day. He said: “Their wedding is a very happy occasion. A close friend is getting married and marriage is a very big thing, this is why many people would love to be here.”

Tony Leung marries Carina Lau in Bhutan

The Associated Press

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

HONG KONG: Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai and longtime companion Carina Lau got married at a resort in the Himalayan nation Bhutan, Hong Kong media reported Tuesday.

Hong Kong art-house director Wong Kar-wai's Jet Tone Films confirmed the location of the wedding and released several photos from Monday's ceremony, but didn't immediately provide more detail.

Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper reported Tuesday that a local monk presided over the wedding and other monks chanted prayers.

The South China Morning Post said Leung donned a white suit and Lau a traditional Chinese red gown.

The Apple Daily said guests included Wong, who directed Leung in movies like "In the Mood for Love" and "Happy Together," director Stanley Kwan, actress Brigitte Lin, singer Faye Wong and actors Chang Chen and Ti Lung.

Wedding photos released Tuesday by Jet Tone showed Leung in a black tuxedo and Lau in a white wedding gown, posing next to a group of several dozen young monks in red robes. The couple also posed in traditional Bhutanese costumes.

Leung's credits also include "Infernal Affairs," which Martin Scorsese remade as "The Departed," and John Woo's recently released Chinese historical epic "Red Cliff." He was named best actor at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 for his performance in "In the Mood for Love."

Lau, an actress, appeared in "Infernal Affairs II," "Center Stage" and director Wong's "Ashes of Time" and "2046."

Hong Kong cinema star couple wed in Bhutan: report

Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:15am IST

HONG KONG (Reuters) - One of Hong Kong's leading entertainment couples, actors Tony Leung and Carina Lau, were married in Bhutan in a Buddhist-inspired ceremony attended by the tiny kingdom's royalty, local media reported on Monday.

Leung is one of Hong Kong's biggest film stars on the international art-house circuit and a longtime collaborator of prize-winning Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai.

Leung and Lau married in the reclusive Himalayan kingdom, known for its breathtaking, pristine natural scenery, on Monday at the exclusive Uma Paro resort.

Newspapers and websites carried photographs of Leung and Lau, who have been together for many years, posing before a congregation of monks in red robes, Leung wearing a tuxedo and Lau in a white gown.

Bhutan royalty reportedly attended the ceremony along with 100 guests, including Canto-pop diva and actress Faye Wong.

"Thank you everyone for making such a long trip to attend our wedding. I believe it is destiny that gathers us together here," Lau was quoted by the South China Morning Post as saying.

Leung, 46, is known for his cool, understated acting style in a raft of films by Wong.

These include his depiction of a gay lover in "Happy Together" and as a cuckolded husband in "In the Mood for Love," a role that landed him the Palme d'Or for best actor at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

Leung and Lau, 43, appeared together in the Wong films "Days of Being Wild" and "Ashes of Time"

Lau said she had chosen Bhutan for her nuptials after a spiritually uplifting visit to the snow-capped Himalayan kingdom.

"I felt the peace the moment I arrived in Bhutan ... I could understand that people here are happy not because of their material life, but because of their satisfaction on a spiritual level," Lau was quoted in the paper as saying.
