The web site www.rottentomatoes.com has several positive reviews of Lust, Caution ( take that Variety and Hollywood Reporter). Our own Flavichu posted a message on the message board. There are 6 reviews--5 fresh, 1 rotten, for an 83% positive rating.
Word of mouth, which includes publicizing these positive reviews (and ignoring the others), is what will help get this movie noticed in the US. The more the film is noticed by serious fans, the better its chances at Oscar nomination time. Talk it up among your friends, not just fellow fans of Tony Leung. We want everyone we know chomping at the bit waiting for the film to come to a theater near them. We want theatrical runs extended because ticket sales are much better than expected. We want a lot of positive press in our local community. Ang Lee is a very respected director in this country. He proved with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon that people in the US would go to Chinese language movies. Brokeback Mountain packed theaters, which surprised the hell out of the promoters because of its "controversial" subject matter. Lust, Caution is just the next phase in his art--combining the strengths of Tiger and Brokeback into a single movie.
I want this film to succeed beyond any naysayer's expectations.
