American Remake of "Confession of Pain" On Board

American film companies are negotiating the rights to remake "Confession of Pain” by Hong Kong directing duo Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, after the success of the US version of "Infernal Affairs".

Andrew Lau revealed that several American companies have offered to buy the rights for a remake and invited him to direct their version.

The director said the offer is still under negotiation, but he won't accept a bid under 1.75 million US dollars, the price he charged for the "Infernal Affairs" remake.

American director Martin Scorsese received critical acclaim for his remake of “Infernal Affairs", which was called "The Departed". But Lau was not entirely satisfied with the script for the American adaptation, saying "It loses the spirit of my original movie."

Lau also revealed he will direct a Hollywood action flick with an English language script and American cast in June.

DiCaprio to Join Hollywood Version of "Confession of Pain"

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a new film: a remake of Hong Kong film "Confession of Pain."

The Hollywood Reporter says that William Monahan, the screenwriter for "The Departed," is writing a script for the new film. The story tells of a former cop who investigates the murder case of his best friend's father-in-law and discovers a series of dark secrets about his friend.

DiCaprio's company Appian Way will also join in production.

This is the second time Warner Brothers has bought the rights to a Hong Kong film. "The Departed," a remake of "Infernal Affairs," just won four Oscars on Sunday night, including the award for best picture.

Apart from taking on a main role, DiCaprio is also expected to be one of the producers.

Oscar spurs another HK remake

Warner Bros remade the Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs into the Oscar-winning movie The Departed.

Now it is hoping to produce another hit by buying the rights to another movie made by the same creative team behind Infernal Affairs and hiring Leonardo DiCaprio's company to shoot the Hollywood version.

Warner Bros spokeswoman Andrea Marozas and Emily Wong for Hong Kong's Media Asia film company confirmed the deal for the rights to the 2006 movie Confession of Pain but did not say how much the rights cost.

Confession of Pain, starring Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Takeshi Kaneshiro, is about a Hong Kong police officer who avenges the murder of his family after marrying the killer's daughter and earning his trust.

Like Infernal Affairs, Confession of Pain was directed by Andrew Lau Wai- keung and Alan Mak Siu-fai and written by Felix Chong Man-keung.

Hollywood producer Roy Lee said that Warner Bros has hired him and DiCaprio's production company to shoot the Confession of Pain remake.

It was not clear if DiCaprio, who starred in The Departed, will also star in the US version of Confession of Pain. Lee said William Monahan, who won an Oscar for the screenplay for The Departed, will also write the remake of Confession of Pain. The producers have not decided on a director. ASSOCIATED PRESS
