Blessings for Red Cliff
It pulls in $3 million in S'pore, and first instalment busts records in China and Japan

THE second part of director John Woo's historical epic, Red Cliff, scored big at the Singapore box office last month.
Red Cliff II, the 140-minute film set in AD208, in the Warring States period during the Han Dynasty, has raked in $3.02 million at the Singapore box office as of Tuesday.
The movie, which stars Tony Leung, Chang Chen, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Lin Chi-ling, and is distributed jointly by Scorpio East, MediaCorp Raintree Pictures and Golden Village, opened on Jan 9.
Its box-office figures beat the impressive $2.61 million Red Cliff I took in after opening in July last year.Other Asian blockbusters that have stormed the Singapore box office include The Warlords (2007), at $2.26 million, and The Myth (2005), which took in $2.14 million.
Singapore fans of the movie are not surprised at Red Cliff II's strong charge forward. 'It's a familiar story to many here, as it is studied in certain schools,' said Mr Bryan Chan, 25, a research assistant. 'And its battle scenes are phenomenal.'
Around the region, the movie - made on a US$80-million (S$120.6-million) budget and which features scenes that involved up to 2,000 actors and crew members - has been performing well too.
It rushed past the 100-million-yuan (S$22-million) threshold in its five-day weekend opening in China, reported Variety.
It was 'like printing money', Mr Weng Li - a spokesman for investor and distribution company, China Film Group - wrote on the company's website.
There, Red Cliff I grossed US$45.6 million in mainland China to become the highestgrossing Chinese-language film on record, noted London-based movie website Screen Daily.
In November last year, Red Cliff I also broke the box-office record for Chinese-language films in Japan, taking more than US$53 million. In total, Red Cliff I took in more than US$100 million in Asian territories.
It has also received rave reviews even from Western audiences, who watched an abridged version. Europe, for example, got a 21/2-hour version.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that thanks to the 'military pageantry,martial-arts sequences and ancient weaponry', the movie turned out to be 'a war-game geek's wet dream'.
The two-part film - backed by investors from China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan - which is said to be Asia's biggest-budget project, has also scooped nominations for both best film and best director at the Asian Film Awards, reported Agence France-Presse last month.
But the film's major stars, Leung and Kaneshiro, were overlooked by judges for the third annual Hong Kong-based prize. Red Cliff will compete next month for the best-picture title with five other Asian films, including The Warlords, Japanese anime flick Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea, and the South Korean film, The Good, The Bad And The Weird, which led the list of nominees with eight nods. -- MYPAPER

I finally had a chance to see Part 2! And this time with the proper subtitles!! It was much better than I anticipated and I definitely enjoyed this one more. I hope they'll set a North American release date soon. |
