Tony, John Woo and Chang Chen
appeared on TV program called "Eigo de shaberanaito "(Direct translation :We must communicate in English)
Sub title in English is "Communication entertaiment for a new era" on NHK Nov. 3 from23:00-23:30 (JST)
English lesson program but it's not strictly academic.
Many national and international stars and artists appear on the show.
Official site in Japanese ( I hope the movie will be posted somewhere)
http://www.nhk.or.jp/night/

Program's MC Patrick Harlan(He's from U.S.) and Moe Oshikiri
(Japanese model- not so fluent in English, but she's trying her best !)
interviewed Tony, John Woo and Chang Chen in English.
(Sorry, I couldn't pick up their dialogue word by word. So if something
important is missing , Eri san , please feel free to add ! )

Celebrity interview
Tony (T), John Woo(W), Chang Chen(C)
Patrick Harlan(P), Moe Oshikiri (M)

Before enterting the interview room
(M): I'm nervous
Brief Introduction of Red Cliff Part1 in VTR

(P): I noticed when we saw the movie yesterday, realized there's a
lots of long shots, helicopter or crane shots when where you saw the movement of military formations serve like a synchronized swimming.
You are well known as action film director , do you think action is a form of art or just the way to excite the crowds?
(W) Both. Action can be artistc and could be very human. A lots of action scenes from RC is tribute to Akira Kurosawa's film
I intend to make this film more international appeal , I found humanity is international.
(M): I learned how important friendhip and trust is from this movie,
I also enjoyed to see beautiful scenes
and.... beautiful scenes ...............
(P): Beautiful scenes and beautiful scenes ??
(M):Oh I'm sorry...You know I'm upset . ... Oh no ! ...I'm nervous
(Chang Chen bursted out laughing)
Narration: Chang Chen found this little too amusing

Brief explanation of Chang Chen and Tony's role in RC in VTR

(M):(To Chang Chen) Tony is your advisor in this movie.
(T): What do you mean by the advisor ?
(M):He's the king and younger than you.
(P):How about you Chang Chen?
(C): Tony is my role model .
(P):Really, Someday you want to grow up to be like Tony Leung ?
(C): I think I can't never be like Tony. He's so far far away.
(T): Is it a compliment ?(smiling)
(P): I think he meant it as a compliment.
(T): I just enjoy my work very much , I enjoy acting so...
(M) Shuyu has a great wife . I heard that you are married lately
what is your ideal couple ?
(T):Actually I don't have any clear defining word for ideal couple is but I think mutual respect
is important for good marriage and I do believe director and his wife has good
marriage that we can learn from, right ?
(P): What makes your marriage special, John?
(W): You got to have patience and keep quiet. My wife wants to talk. So don't try to argue with her .
Just keep calm and listen. Then it'll be fine.
(P):That will make most of women happier, I think.
(W):Actually I'm a boring man. I really don't know how to make her happy. It's hard for me to say
" I Love You" It's not easy for me to do that . Only thing I can do is
try to make her calm and try to make her feel safe.
Sometimes when I come home , I pick up flowers from the garden.
Not from the flower shop . but from thegarden and
I give it to her .
(P): Thant's from "your" garden, right ?
(W): Yes. I try to make her happy

Narration :Moe moves in;
(M): What type of woman do you like ? (to three of them)
(exclamation marks appeared on the heads of three guests. )
(P): Oh, that's very straightforward question.
You two are married...
(T): Who else can we ....... (smiling )
(P): Your answer is limited , right ?
(T): Right !

Thank you Yuka for the translation.

That's perfect.

I noticed when John Woo said "You got to have patience", Tony agreed and repeated "Patience". ha ha ha.

For the last question;
I guessed Tony was going to say "Who else can we (Tony and John Woo) talk about besides our wives." Wink from his expression. (smiling happily)

Two of them are already married, so P asked Chang Chen specially, but even he didn't answer this question and just laughing. Laughing

Thank you Eri for your comment. Very Happy

My English isn't good enough to explain
how relaxed interviewees were compared to the interviewers.
I'm just grateful for Red Cliff casts and the director, John Woo,
had done so many works ( even though it's movie promotions)
in Japan.

I can tell from the clothes Tony was wearing, he has done a lots of interview on one day !! Smile
( I think he shot interview at The Peninsula Tokyo for Fuji network TV with Takeshi Kaneshiro
and John Woo on the same day.)(?)
