Interviews

Voice No 17 Tony Leung (Actor)

"For me, acting a role which is touching people's hearts is like a miracle."

John Woo made World best selling story into the spectacle movie "Red Cliff".
This movie exceeded the million mark of Box Office record in the shortest time in this year.
We interviewed Tony Leung who was a leading role of this big hit movie.
He talked about his acting and Bistro Smap's back stage.

Q: Did you feel any pressure to act ©P·ì of Three Kingdoms story which is very popular in Japan as well ?

T: I didn't feel the pressure specially. I thought it was a very challenging. I knew that everyone had their own image of ©P·ì, so I thought it was impossible to make a perfect ©P·ì for everyone. I tried not to feel the pressure about it.

Q: How did you established the role of ©P·ì ? Was there any part which was difficult or you made a special effort ?

T: I think each actor's way is different. I did it in my own way. For this role, I added the character of my own understanding which is that he is not so open to others and introvert.

Q: What is the attractive point of ©P·ì ?

T: He was a very strong strategist, on the other hand, he was very faithful to his master and leaded a modest life even though he had ability to do more. He also liked art and study, loved music and poems. He was a highly cultural person.
I think we can learn a lot of things from him.

Q: This is the 3rd time you work with John Woo, what is the attraction of him ?

T: It has been long time since I worked with him before, but we can understand each other without saying, so I felt we could fill in the gap we had in years very quickly. John is very romanticist and very man like man who value the friendship very much.

Q: How do you think about other casts including Takeshi Kaneshiro ?

T: Takeshi and me are good friends. We had worked together before, so this time I could work with him very smoothly.
Not only him, all the casts in this movie had worked very hard and showed very best act. There was perfect team sprit.
All the casts and staffs made all the efforts they could to make this movie.

Q: Usually the story of Three Kingdoms appeals more to men, but which are the points you think appealing to women as well ?

T: Oh, I think two female characters ¤p³ì (Ling Chi Lin) and ©|» (Vicky Zhao) would be attractive to female audience.
¤p³ì is very feminin and sensitive, ©|» is very active and lovely with some man like decision making ability.

Q: ©P·ì(Tony) is a great commander who made the miracle possible, if you can do a miraculous work, what would you do ?

T: For me, acting a role which is touching people's hearts is like a miracle, so I would like to continue to do that.

Q: What do you think about Japanese TV and Magazines ?

T: I was a guest at Smap x Smap's Gourmet part, I was very impressed to see how much the production staff were prepared in advance. They asked me all small details of my preference in food, and as a result, every one of those dishes they cooked were wonderfully matching my taste.

Livedoor Interview with Tony Leung
<If I have a chance, I'd love to play a villain again>

Q :Did you know Three Kingdoms Saga in advance? Did you like the story?

Tony: To tell the truth, I read the story for the first time after
I decided to take this role . I thought the story is very impressive
and I liked it.

Q Three Kingdoms is a very popular story in Japan we even
have TV games, too. I can’t help getting away with the image
that Shuyu(Zhou Yu) is portrayed as physically weak character
( in the original story) . Please tell us what you gave your full
attention in playing Shyu’s role and what do you like about Shuyu?

Tony : By acting Shuyu I found him a man of delicate sensitivity.
He has deep understanding of music, has a sense of
responsibility, excellent military commander but at the same
time I think he is very delicate. He looks like a truly manly man,
but he is a very delicate character and quick to notice everything .

Q: You said you didn’t know Three Kingdoms in advance .
If you are free to choose which role do you want to play?

Tony: If I was given a chance again , I would choose Soso(Cao Cao) .
He is the only villain in this film. I didn’t have a chance to
play such a role and I’d like to try it . What I want to say is
that it would be interesting to experience inside of Soso’s mind.

Q: Director John Woo said, "There were 204 cutting in all, and
took a picture of all the action scenes by slow motion with
a high-speed camera". You are also challenging the action
this time.Which part of the body do you pay attention
when shooting the action scene ?

Tony: I just try to concentrate on my part (action scene )and for the rest , I’m not aware ..

Q:Costumes are very elaborate and looked very heavy. Did you
have a hard time when shooting the action scene?

Tony: Costume is not single layered costume but multiple layered.
In my case, my mantle is large so when I tried to walk it winds with
my sword and other casts’ swords.
I had to wear Topknot (pug?) with feathers on my head.
So when I’m doing action scene, with a bar in my hand, it bumps
with many things. There were a lots of happenings.
I sometimes stepped on my mantle.( laugh )

Q :I heard that shooting took place in the terrible heat. Did you have
hard time shooting in a terrible heat ?

Tony :It is strange. It’s like the saying “The danger past,
and God forgotten.”Until you ask, I forgot about the heat.
At the time of shooting it was really hot and intolerable.
Armor costume was heavy and hot, too.

Q:Did you pay special attention to managing your physical condition?

Tony: Most of all I tried to keep a regular life. Usually, the motion
picture shooting is done by staying up all night. But RC shooting
was done almost in daytime. So when shooting was done
I left the set and slept early. I tried to eat something light. If I didn’t
I think I’d die (laugh)

Q:What kind of food did you eat?

Tony: I don’t want to eat meat in a hot weather.
I eat vegetables and rice most of the time. But when I ‘m in the
movie like RC which takes a long time shooting, I would
bring a table tennis instructor and a massager (massage practitioner)
with me. So that I can keep fit and have myself massaged every day.

Q: I heard you played table tennis with Shidou Nakamura

Tony: Yes, we did.

Q:I found duet performance of harps very sensual.
( note: interviewer used the word “erotic” in the original sentence )
Did you practice harp with Takeshi Kaneshiro who played Komei(Zhuge Liang)?

Tony: Harp duet scene was shot in such an improvisational way.
I went to the movie set and I was taught how to play. Then I perfomed.
That’s the way most of the movie in Hong Kong is shot .
I think it’s Hong Kong style.

Q: Can you play any musical instruments?

Tony: I’m not good at it at all.(laugh)

Q: Speaking of Tony Leung, your performances in “In the Mood for Love”
and “Lust Caution” come readily to mind.
In Red Cliff Part1 there’s a love scene with Xiao Qiao.
Did you give any ideas so that you can present a beautiful love scene ?

Tony: You mentioned about Lust Caution .The bedroom scene is special
because we have to rehearse so many times and close communication
between the casts is very important .
I think the idea of making the love scene “look” beautiful is just a
request from a director-a scene required for the story to unroll.
To tell you the truth, I don’t think John Woo isn’t good at shooting
love scene.(laugh) . But he said such a beautiful scene is
necessary for this film.

Q: Compared with "辣手神探/HARD-BOILED " was John Woo’s direction different?

Tony : Red Cliff was shot in action+ C G , so it’s different from usual
gunfight scenes. But John Woo had a sophisticated way of presenting
characters without guns and explosives but by using horse , arrows and soldiers.
For example, when I saw the scene when Zhao Yun aka Zhao Zilong catches an
arrow on a horse, I thought <Wow! That’s great!!>

Q: Obviously, Part1 is a first part of a story. Part 2 is filled with more action scenes .
I’ve noticed there is a scene where blazing flame is expected .
Please tell Japanese fans the highlights of Part 2.

Tony: I think Part 1 serves as an introduction of each character because
there are so many characters appearing in this film.
But in Part2, there are all sorts of conflicts and contradictions are expected.
I believe Part 2 has much to offer audiences.
I think it’s very different from Part 1.
