When Anupam Kher got a call from Ang Lee

Anupam Kher is delighted that Chinese director Ang Lee’s movie ‘Lust, Caution’ has won the coveted Golden Lion Award for Best Film at the recently concluded Venice Film Festival.

Kher plays a small but important role of a Muslim character in the movie, which is set in Shanghai during the Second World War.

After Kher learnt about the movie winning the Golden Lion he called Ang Lee but the director had then gone to Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival.

Anyhow, Kher talked to Lee’s brother and told him to congratulate Lee on his behalf.

To Anupam’s surprise, Lee later called him back and told him: “Mr Kher, the Golden Lion is as much yours as mine.”

Kher is impressed by Lee’s grace and humility.

Ang Lee has made successful and acclaimed films like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’ for which he won the best director Oscar in 2005.

As for Anupam Kher, he is presently shooting for a Hindi movie in Britain.
