Last month, while at Cannes, Venice Film Festival artistic director Marco Müller said this year's event will feature a lot of English-language films and a focus on up-and-coming filmmakers. Both statements fit with the announcement now that Atonement will be opening the festival, which kicks off August 29. The UK-produced pic is the sophomore effort of Joe Wright. It also marks the director's continued collaboration with Keira Knightley, who he directed to an Oscar nomination in his debut, Pride & Prejudice. Atonement is a war-time epic romance adapted from Ian McEwan's (Enduring Love) novel by Christopher Hampton (The Quiet American). Months after its premiere at Venice, it opens in the U.S. just in time for Academy notice on December 7.

A few months ago we shared the film's trailer, and just last week we got some photos, but neither is enough for us to tell if Knightley will deserve another nomination for her work with Wright. After recently watching the actress in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, I can't imagine her ever winning an Oscar, but perhaps Wright has some sort of magic touch with her. I will have to wait about five months to judge for myself, but Knightley's fans in the UK will be getting to see the performance about two weeks after it shows in Venice, on September 14. Then it rolls out to other parts of the world in the fall and winter.

So far Atonement seems to be the only film officially announced to screen at this year's Venice Film Festival, though last month Variety reported the fest will include a number of American films, likely including Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf, Todd Haynes' I'm Not There and Ang Lee's Lust, Caution. We'll know for sure on July 26. The only other things we know for sure about the fest are that Zhang Yimou is heading the jury, that Tim Burton is getting a career achievement award and that there will be a Spaghetti Western retrospective. If you love both Knightley and Sergio Leone, you may want to start making your reservations today.

ROME - British helmer Joe Wright's adaptation of Ian McEwan's "Atonement" will open the 64th Venice Film Festival as a film in competition.

Wright's sophomore follow-up to "Pride and Prejudice" will world preem on the Lido on Aug. 29, with key talent Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave expected on the red carpet.

The "Atonement" launch will be followed by a gala party on the Excelsior beach thrown by the Venice Biennale and Universal Pictures.

Produced by Paul Webster, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title, drama centers around a haunting mistaken accusation made by a 13-year-old girl. Pic will be released Sept. 14 in the U.K. via Universal and goes out Stateside on Dec. 7.

"For the first time in the festival's history, the opening film is by such a young director," said Venice topper Marco Mueller. Wright is 35.

While Blighty takes on a prominent role in the Lido's upcoming edition, Mueller has recently underscored that there will be a strong U.S. presence at the fest, which runs Aug. 29-Sept. 8.

Yank pics locked in for a Lido launch at this stage are Todd Haynes' highly anticipated Bob Dylan biopic "I'm Not There" and Ang Lee's espionage thriller "Lust, Caution." Also highly likely to unspool are Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood," Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Woody Allen's "Cassandra's Dream."

On the artier Euro front, Ken Loach's labor drama "These Times" and Eric Rohmer's "The Romance of Astrea and Celadon" are believed to be among titles set for a Lido berth.

Asian entries will include Jiang Wen's "The Sun Also Rises," which Mueller described as "China's first Emir Kusturica-like satire," and an unspecified work by Venice Golden Lion winner Jia Zhangke ("Still Life"), possibly a docu titled "Useless."

Venice's 60-title lineup will be announced July 26.

"Lust Caution" to Vie at Venice Film Festival

Ang Lee's new film "Lust Caution" has received an invitation to compete for a Golden Lion award at this year's Venice Film Festival in August, Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reports.

All the cast members of the film are expected to attend the festival, which begins on August 29.

Earlier reports said the film would not be the festival's opening film since post-production work was not finished yet.

After watching an early un-cut version of the film, sources from Taiwan reveal that the festival's selectors thought "Lust Caution" would turn out as another milestone work by Ang Lee. And they thought the film had strong potential to win an award at the festival.

The director is still in New York working on the film's post-production editing. It is expected to be finished by mid-August.

Marco Muller, director of film festival, also expressed strong interest in another Chinese movie entitled "Sun Also Rises", directed by Jiang Wen.

However, Hong Kong-based Emperor Pictures, one of the film's publishers, told Oriental Morning Post that the festival's movie selectors have already watched "Sun Also Rise", but as yet it has not received a formal invitation to compete in the festival.

Ang Lee Lusts After World Release

2007-07-10 20:12:27 CRIENGLISH.com

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's latest work, "Lust, Caution", has been slated for worldwide release on 28 September.

Director Ang Lee is now working on post-production editing, which is expected to be finished by the middle of August. The Shanghai Youth Daily reported on Tuesday.

As a movie adaptation of famed Chinese author Eileen Chang's novel, the film tells of what happened in Shanghai during World War II, and is said to be loosely based on actual events.

A young girl, played by actress Tang Wei, is assigned to seduce a high-ranking intelligence officer, working for the Japanese-controlled puppet government, before leading him into an assassination trap. She later realizes she is in love with the officer, played by Hong Kong actor Tony Leung. The unexpected love affair generates more turmoil.

James Schamus from investor group Focus Features, remarks that the story is "very Asia", and he is confident that Ang Lee can make it a worldwide success.

Tony Leung's "Lust, Caution" to Be Entered in Venice Film Festival

Director Ang Lee accepted an interview with a mainland website and confirmed that "Lust, Caution" 《色.戒》will be featured in the Venice Film Festival. The movie stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai and will be shown in China in September.

Ang Lee has already spent 3 months editing "Lust, Caution" and the progress has been smooth. Ang Lee revealed that filming Cheung Ailing's novel was a difficult feat. The novel was extremely realistic and trying to grasp it was often difficult and a brutal task.

As to the deeper meaning behind "Lust, Caution," Ang Lee said that the "Lust" in the title refers to people's ambitions and emotions. Thus the first two-thirds of the film focuses on the lust, the innermost raw feelings possessed by people.

The latter part of the film will focus on the restraint that people must exercise ro prevent self-destruction.

Ang Lee admitted that the latter part of the film focuses less on emotions and more on logic. He used artistic merit to illustrate how to withdraw from the fatal consequences of lust.

Leehom Wang, Joan Chen to Star in Ang Lee's Lust Caution Coming September

Taiwanese American director Ang Lee says his new Chinese-language spy thriller ``Lust, Caution'' has been invited to compete for the top Golden Lion prize at this year's Venice Film Festival.

The selection comes two years after Lee's gay romance film ``Brokeback Mountain'' won the Golden Lion in 2005. It went on to earn Lee an Oscar for best director in 2006.

``They (the Venice festival organizers) invited us to take part in the competition. I think they quite liked the movie. I think they're very happy that I'm returning to Venice after 'Brokeback Mountain,''' Lee said in an interview with the Chinese news Web site Sina.com.

Footage of the interview was posted on Sina.com Friday.

The addition of ``Lust, Caution'' has not been officially announced. This year's festival lineup is due to be released July 26 in Rome. Organizers did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking confirmation of the movie's inclusion.

``Lust, Caution,'' based on a short story by famed Chinese writer Eileen Chang, is about a group of patriotic students who plot to assassinate the intelligence chief of China's Japan-backed World War II-era government.

It features Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Joan Chen from ``The Last Emperor,'' and Chinese-American pop star Leehom Wang.

Lee said that post-production work on the movie was going smoothly, and that he had spent several months editing the film and has moved on to music, dubbing and special effects.

The selection of ``Lust, Caution'' helps give this year's Venice Film Festival a distinctly Chinese flavor.

The festival's jury will be chaired by famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who made ``Raise the Red Lantern,'' ``The Story of Qiu Ju'' and ``To Live.''

Organizers earlier announced that the John Woo-produced film ``Blood Brothers'' will close the festival. The movie is about the breakdown of the friendship between three young men who move to Shanghai from the countryside in the 1930s.

In the Sina.com interview, Lee said he was affected by the dark mood of ``Lust, Caution.''

``I often felt I couldn't escape the story,'' he said. ``Now I'm beginning to detach myself slowly.''

He said he had intimidated his actors with his exacting demands. Actor Leung told The Associated Press in March that Lee was one of the toughest directors he has worked with.

``I don't think the actors were scared of me because I'm mean,'' he said. ``I very solemnly set standards for them to follow. They probably felt a lot of pressure. I insisted on meeting those standards.''

Lee said ``Lust, Caution'' will be released in the U.S. and China around the same time in late September.
