Mob epics have To calling shots

Friday, February 02, 2007

Veteran director Johnnie To is the man to beat at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards - one of the top honors in the Chinese-language movie industry.

To's two gangsters films, Election 2 and Exiled, racked up nine nominations - mostly in key categories - in a shortlist announced Thursday.

To's films picked up nominations in best film, best director and the best supporting actor categories.

He is up against stiff competition, including famed mainland director Zhang Yimou, action star Jet Li, and fellow Hong Kong director Patrick Tam.

Zhang's imperial drama Curse of the Golden Flower, nominated for an Oscar for best costume design, Li's biopic of kung fu master Huo Yuanjia, Fearless, and Tam's meticulous story of a deadbeat father, After This Our Exile, are also competing for best movie honors.

The nominations mark a successful year for To, who crafted two entertaining and stylish movies. Exiled is the story of a group of gangsters ordered to kill a former colleague and features sophisticated gunfight sequences.

Election 2 uses a mobster story to convey smart political commentary on China's growing influence in Hong Kong. To's two films, however, missed out in the top acting categories.

In line for best actor are Chow Yun- fat for Curse of the Golden Flower, Li for Fearless and former Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who was nominated for playing an introverted police officer who seeks revenge in Confession of Pain.

Pop star Aaron Kwok is another key contender. Kwok won the best actor prize last year at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards - the Chinese-language equivalent of the Oscars - for his performance as an abusive father in After This Our Exile.

The best actress field is comparatively weak.

Chinese movie star Gong Li from Curse is the favorite, with the rest of the field made up by second-tier actresses nominated for movies that have not generated much attention.

Rising star Isabella Leong is in contention for Isabella, a moodily shot father-daughter bonding story set in Macau. Malaysian Lee Sin-je was nominated for the horror film Re-cycle.

The winners will be announced April 15. ASSOCIATED PRESS

HKFA will be held tomorrow. Best Actor Nominee Tony Leung noted that one needs all factors matching to win an award. To him, what pushes him to improve his acting is to review previous performance and

The competition for the Best Actor Award is very keen this year. "Which one is the strongest?" Tony said, "as an actor, I don't think we can differentiate good or bad acting. The most important thing is an actor is performing from his heart and express his feeling at that moment, I would say every actor is excellent.

Tony revealed that the driving force of his career is to review his performance after each movie. He said, "everytime I see my performance, I notice some room for improvements, that makes me work harder next time."

Asking whether the Cannes Best Actor Award is the most memorable award for him, Tony agreed that he had a stronger feeling to the Cannes Award, but every award is equally meaningful and of the same importance. Many Hong Kong actors aim to act in Hollywood, Tony revealed that all along he received many English language scripts, he would be happy to work on one, if it is a good script, with attractive story, a sophisticated role, and an interesting project.

Luck

Art-house drama scoops top honours in Hong Kong film awards

Posted on April 15, 2007 (EST)

Family drama "After This Our Exile" swept the top honours at the Hong Kong Film Awards, winning five prizes, including best film and best director for Patrick Tam.

HONG KONG (AFP) - "Thank you for the judges' support for me.... I thank all the actors and crew members and also God, who gave me such a great gift," Tam told a 1,000-strong audience at the harbour-front Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The movie was Tam's first feature film since his "My Heart Is That Eternal Rose" in 1989.

The art-house film about a single and abusive father who turns to gambling won child star Gouw Ian Iskandar two gongs in the best new performer and supporting actor categories. The movie also won the best screenplay title.

"I didn't think I would win another prize again. I've learned a lot from making the film. I'm very happy," the child star said.

The movie beat strong contenders in the best film category, including world-renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou's "Curse of the Golden Flower" and veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To's gangster flick "Election 2."

To did not win a single prize despite being tipped to win one of the major gongs. His triad movies, "Election 2" and "Exile" received five and four nominations respectively, including for best director and best film.

Dark horse Lau Ching-wan bagged the best actor gong for his role in "My Name is Fame," trumping strong competition from charismatic actor Chow Yun-fat of "Golden Flower," martial arts master Jet Li of "Fearless" and heart-throb Tony Leung Chiu-wai of "Confession of Pain."

"Golden Flower," the most expensive Chinese film to date, with a budget of 45 million dollars, won four prizes in mostly minor categories including art direction, with Chinese starlet Gong Li being crowned the best actress.

The film, which was nominated for best costume design at this year's Oscars, picked up the best costume and make-up design award here. Taiwanese singer, actor and composer Jay Chou won the best original film song gong for the movie.

The sumptuous movie tells the story of an imperial family falling into turmoil, with the emperor (Chow) gradually poisoning the empress (Gong) after she had an affair with her stepson.

Although Zhang lost out in the best director award, his "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles" picked up the best Asian film prize.

"Fearless," starring Li, who portrayed martial arts master Huo Yuanjia in the movie, had seven nominations but only took home one prize, with Yuen Wo-ping beating kung fu hero Jackie Chan of comedy "Rob B Hood" for the best action choreography.

Composer Peter Kam, who won top honours for his music in "Isabella" at the Berlin Film Festival last year, has also been recognised for the best original film score for the same movie.

Movie guru Run Run Shaw, who is 100 years old and whose film career spans more than 40 years, received a special honour for his contribution to the local film industry.

The 26th awards struggled to attract some of the big-name stars. Zhang, Li, Gong, Chow and To were all absent from the gala evening.

Among those who stepped onto the red carpet were Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Aaron Kwok, Jay Chou, Donnie Yen as well as South Korean stars Song Hye Kyo and Kwon Sang Woo.

Director's comeback after 17 years wins big at Hong Kong Film Awards

HONG KONG: "After This Our Exile," a meticulously told drama about a deadbeat father, was the big winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday, clinching best movie and best director for Patrick Tam.

In a major upset, Lau Ching-wan won best actor for the little-known movie "My Name Is Fame," beating heavyweights like Hollywood stars Jet Li, Chow Yun-fat and former Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

Gong Li from "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Miami Vice" was named best actress for playing an empress who helps stage a coup in famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou's imperial epic "Curse of the Golden Flower." Gong didn't attend Sunday's ceremony.

Hong Kong director Tam made a triumphant return after a 17-year-break with "After This Our Exile," the painstakingly told downfall of a hot-tempered cook, who pimps and forces his son to steal after losing his job, his home and his wife.

Tam, part of Hong Kong's "new wave" cinema in the 1980s, quit directing after making "My Heart Is That Eternal Rose" in 1989 because he wasn't happy with his work, turning to teaching and movie editing instead.

Tam's early work was beautifully shot but thin on substance. Making his comeback, the director strove to perfect both form and content. The director's cut of "After This Our Exile" is a stunning 160 minutes.

In testimony to his improved storytelling, "After This Our Exile" also won Tam a best screenwriter prize Sunday.

Asked about the trend of Hong Kong filmmakers working in China and the decline of the local industry, Tam said: "If you want to revive the Hong Kong cinema, the most important thing is to raise the creativity and quality of Hong Kong film industry workers. Whether you're working with Hollywood or China isn't the most important point." Tam's best movie and best director wins Sunday were impressive because he beat respected Hong Kong counterpart Johnnie To, who was nominated twice in both categories for the gangster movies "Election 2" and "Exiled."

But perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was Lau's best actor win. He won for playing a faded movie star who finds new life by mentoring a budding actress in "My Name Is Fame," a film that generated little attention amid the new trend of Chinese epics.

Although Lau was the least well-known among the best actor nominees, he's a veteran actor whose work dates back to 1984.

Lau, who rose his trophy forcefully in celebration, joked about his relative obscurity with his fellow nominees in his acceptance speech.

"I have to thank actors who are senior than me ... like brother Tony Leung Chiu-wai, brother Aaron Kwok. I will work hard to continue your legacy," Lau said, even though both actors are his contemporaries.

Kwok's loss in the best actor category was another surprise because he won the prize at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards — the Chinese-language equivalent of the Oscars — in November for playing the father in "After This Our Exile."

Ten-year-old Ian Gouw, who played the son in "After This Our Exile," cemented his status as one of the industry's hottest child stars. After winning best supporting actor at the Golden Horse Awards, he won the same prize in Hong Kong, also picking up the best new performer award.

Gouw struggled to hold up both trophies when posing for photographers backstage. He said his mother has promised to buy him a Nintendo Wii video game console and 10 games as a reward.

"I learned a lot making this movie by director Tam. I was very happy. I will keep working hard," Gouw said, although he admitted his ambition was to become a professional tennis player.

China's Zhou Xun won best supporting actress for playing the innocent lover of a prince in "The Banquet," which was inspired by the Shakespeare play "Hamlet."

The lifetime achievement award went to entertainment mogul Run Run Shaw, who founded the famous Chinese movie studio Shaw Brothers with his siblings and later launched the local TV station TVB.
