Hi,

I was going through articles written for the South China Morning Post and came across their "100 Years Celebration" and found a couple of small articles that mention Tony. It's old news... obviously, it's a celebration of the past 100 years... but I thought you all might like to see what they wrote:

THE REEL THING

Overseas audiences began a love affair with Chinese films more than 20 years after Bruce Lee's death. Jackie Chan kicked and punched his way to Hollywood, starring in successful films such as Rush Hour in 1998 and Shanghai Noon in 2000, while director John Woo made his Hollywood mark with Broken Arrow in 1995 and Face/Off in 1997. Woo collaborator Chow Yun-fat also made the leap when he paired up with Woo in The Replacement Killers in 1998. But the proudest moment came in 2000 when director Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, won Academy awards for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Song, Art Direction and Cinematography. Although Lee is Taiwanese, the film is considered a Hong Kong project because it was essentially produced with Hong Kong talent, with Chow in the leading role, cinematographer Peter Pau, costume designer Tim Yip and choreographer Yuen Woo-ping. Across the Atlantic, another Hong Kong director, Wong Kar-wai, was making waves at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. In the Mood For Love won rave reviews and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who played the leading role opposite Maggie Cheung Man-yuk, took home the award for Best Male Performance.

PIRACY UNDER FIRE
________________________________________
Piracy was in the spotlight in March 1999 when film stars, legislators and musicians marched to the Central Government offices to demand a crackdown. In support of the protest, all 73 cinemas in Hong Kong closed and television and radio stations suspended broadcasts for short periods during the day.

In October 1993, thousands of fans turned out to bid farewell to Canto-pop singer Danny Chan Pak-Keung, who died after being in a coma for 17 months. It was suspected the coma was caused by drug overdose. The 35-year-old singer recorded 30 albums in his 25 year career.

Art house film director, Wong Kar-wai, won best director at the 50th Cannes Film Festival in 1997 for Happy Together. Notably unique, the film stared Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing, as two gay lovers on holiday in Buenos Aires. The movie was the first Hong Kong production to be entered in the prestigious festival. The poster promoting the movie was banned in Hong Kong because it pictured the fully-clothed lovers twining legs.

At 18, Li Yundi became the youngest musician to win the 2000 Fredric Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw, Poland. At the competition, held every five years, Li performed an interpretation of the composer's E minor piano concerto. As the first pianist to be awarded the gold medal since 1985, Li received US$25,000 (HK$195,000).

"Twining legs," oh how naughty.... hee hee. Laughing
