Tony Leung is best actor - again

2046 and Kung Fu Hustle bag most awards in 24th Hong Kong Film Awards

WHO is undisputedly the best actor in Hong Kong?

The answer was revealed last night when Tony Leung Chiu Wai walked away with the Best Actor award at the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards.

The win is a record-breaking fifth for the actor, who won for his role as a cynical writer in Wong Kar Wai's romance movie, 2046.

His triumph scores a hattrick for the winning combination of him and director Kar Wai.

The director's two other films, Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love, have both bagged Tony previous Best Actor awards.

Despite his coup, being Best Actor so many times over has clearly numbed the 43-year-old: His face was expressionless as he walked up to the stage to collect his award.

The only sign of any excitement on his part was the wide grin when the trophy was eventually placed in his hands.

But it was no surprise to anyone that he would beat Stephen Chow, Alex Fong, Daniel Wu and Jackie Chan to the Best Actor honour.

Still, his impassive reaction could be due to having to sit through the three-hour bore of a show.

The annual event, which honours the best in the Hong Kong film industry, was held at the Hong Kong Coliseum this year and hosted by seasoned emcees Carol Cheng and Lawrence Cheng.

The red carpet parade became predictable very quickly, with too many actresses - among them Zhang Ziyi, Miriam Yeung and Taiwanese top model Lin Chi-ling - opting for the same bare-back look.

So were the results of the awards, with 2046 and Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle slicing through the competition, tying at six awards each.

Kung Fu Hustle had earlier been hotly tipped to sweep the awards, thanks to its whopping 15 nominations, out of the total 19 categories.

TRIBUTE TO BRUCE LEE

Aptly enough, the Kung Fu Hustle-dominated awards paid tribute to the late Bruce Lee - the man who first kicked off the gongfu craze in Hollywood long before Jackie Chan rumbled in the Bronx.

The posthumous award, Star Of The Century, was accepted by Bruce's daughter, Shannon.

Jackie Chan's New Police Story, which had received good buzz, failed to deliver despite its eight nominations. However, he was honoured with the Professionalism Award for his contribution to the Hong Kong movie industry.

The 51-year-old said he appreciated the prize because it honoured his professionalism and conduct, and not just his artistic achievements.

He turned his acceptance speech into a lecture of sorts for son Jaycee, who also lost out in the Best New Performer category.

Sounding like the stern dad he is known to be, Jackie said: 'Mr Fang Zuming (Jaycee's Chinese name), it doesn't matter that you didn't win Best New Performer award this year. You can always win other awards next year.

'But let me warn you that if you want this (Professionalism) award, you will have to wait 30 years. Being lazy isn't going to get you anywhere.'

This year's awards also paid tribute to 100 years of Chinese film-making, with trailers highlighting the best of Chinese cinema, plugging the gaps between the award presentations.

But far from injecting a celebratory mood, the flashbacks were unfortunately dull and uninspiring, made worse by the insincere voice-overs by newbies like Jaycee and Chen Po Lin, who were apparently reading from prepared scripts.

Even attention-junkie Bai Ling, who can almost be counted on to pull off an outrageous stunt at any time, was not herself last night.

Though skimpily dressed as usual, in a red strappy dress that showed off a tiger tattoo on her lower back and a butterfly one on her cleavage, the 35-year-old's mood didn't match her dressing.

Her sedate thank-you speech ('I'm actually very nervous!') for her Best Supporting Actress performance in Dumplings showed none of the loopiness she is known for.

Most of the presenters' jokes also fell dismally flat, with the exception of actor Anthony Wong.

LUCKY HUG

Paired up with the luscious Lin Chi-ling as the first set of presenters, Anthony insisted on a replay of Chi-ling's famous lucky hug for Andy Lau at last year's Golden Horse Awards, where was was crowned Best Actor.

After the 31-year-old towering beauty laughingly obliged, Anthony shouted to Andy, who was seated in the audience, 'Wah zai (Andy's nickname), I also did it!' and cheekily flashed a victory sign.

What a pity the rest of the evening was barren of laughs after that.

# A repeat telecast of the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards will be shown on Celestial Movies (StarHub Ch 61) on Saturday at 9pm.

A movie night without suspense

Winners at 24th Hong Kong Film Awards

BEIJING, Mar. 29 -- The 24th Hong Kong Film Awards proved to be a ceremony without suspense as almost all the most important honors went to Kung Fu Hustle and 2046.

The Hong Kong Coliseum was packed to capacity Sunday night when almost 10,000 audience members witnessed the most spectacular movie event in Hong Kong, which also paid tribute to the 100th anniversary of Chinese movie industry.

Hailed as an “epoch-making” production in Hong Kong movie industry, Kung Fu Hustle earned the best picture award. It was hard to proclaim that Kung Fu Hustle had more artistic value than its counterparts such as Breaking News, One Nite in Mongkok, 2046 and New Police Story, but everyone was glad Hustle won the honor and the reason was simple. It was the film that brought hope. Its status as the highest grossing Hong Kong movie of all time was seen as a big spur to the ailing Hong Kong movie industry by the people in the circle who were despairing.

The award also proved again the market-centered criteria of the Hong Kong Film Awards, which has never concealed its tendency to award the most profitable movie, rather than the movie with the most artistic innovation.

There was a slight surprise for Stephen Chow, director of Kung Fu Hustle who was regarded as a clear front-runner in the best director category. He lost to Derek Yee who directed One Nite in Mongkok. The result didn’t surprise many people because the voters for the award obviously wanted to strike a balance between market value and art value. Yee was the right person who possessed the trait to create a lucrative artistic movie. One Nite in Mongkok had an old storyline, but the injection of serious elements such as black humor, emotion, belief and fatalism upgraded its depth in art. Yee deserved the award.

2046 swept the acting awards, with Tony Leung getting the best actor award and Zhang Ziyi the best actress award. It is the fifth time Leung won the award, although many people claimed he was not the most deserving person. Jackie Chan, nominated for his role in New Police Story, had been regarded as the most likely person to get the award. Instead, Chan was given an award for professional spirit as compensation.

Zhang Ziyi surpassed any other contender in global influence in the competition for the best actress award. But as far as acting skills were concerned, she was definitely not the best. No wonder critics were disappointed by the deteriorating Hong Kong Film Awards and their need to take advantage of Zhang to garner more international attention.

Never had a supporting actress grabbed so much glamour, outshining all other cast members in a movie, including the leading lady. Bai Ling did it, with her just-so-so performance in Dumplings and her singularly sexy figure and exaggerating body movement. She earned the best supporting actress award, to the dismay of some of the upright audience members who snickered at her “cheap flesh show.”

Veteran actor Yuen Wah finally received recognition for his 20 years of acting as the best supporting actor for Kung Fu Hustle. Enditem
